Chapter 810
Evander immediately stepped in front of Evelina to shield her. “Lemira, haven’t you said enough? What happened back then had nothing to do with Eve. And besides, you didn’t even catch her father-you arrested her cousin’s uncle, not her dad.”
Lemira was taken aback. How did Evander find out?
“Evander, shut your mouth!”
As soon as Asher heard this, he snapped at Evander, “How could you say that? How could you say something like that right in front of Evelina?”
Asher was so angry he was shaking.
Evander suddenly realized he’d said too much, and hastily tried to justify himself, sounding guilty: “It’s not like Evelina can leave this place anyway. Even if she knows, there’s no way for her to contact her father.”
Evelina was stunned silent—she had never suspected that Lemira had been lying to her all along!
A spark of hope flickered in Evelina’s heart. If her father was still out there and not caught, he would definitely try everything to rescue her.
Noticing the joy in Evelina’s face, Lemira immediately raised her hand and slapped her hard across the face.
The blow left Evelina reeling. She screamed, “Lemira, what are you doing?”
Lemira’s expression was cold as ice. “Were you just thinking, ‘If my dad’s still out there, he’ll come save me’?”
“I—I wasn’t thinking that! Stop making things up!”
Of course Evelina wouldn’t admit it. Seeing the deadly look in Lemira’s eyes, she quickly clutched her stomach and pretended to be in pain. “Evander, my stomach hurts so bad…”
Evander immediately rushed over. “Lemira, what do you think you’re doing? Are you trying to kill someone here?”
Lemira let out a chilling laugh. “So what if Evelina dies right here? What difference would it make?”
“Are you crazy?!”
The look on Lemira’s face made Evander uneasy. She was nothing like the timid, soft-spoken sister he remembered.
Desperate, Evander looked to Asher for help. “Asher, aren’t you going to do something?”
Asher didn’t even flinch. “You’re the one who let it slip-why should I get involved?”
“So you’re just going to stand by and watch Evelina get hurt, maybe even lose the baby? Watch me lose my only child?”
“A child born to the daughter of our enemy is better off never being born,” Asher said coldly.
He truly felt they’d be better off without Evelina and her child around the very sight of them disgusted him.
Evander was devastated. “Asher, don’t forget, it’s because of you that my leg ended up like this!”
“And wasn’t it because Evelina’s father killed our parents that our enemies staged that so-called accident? That’s what cost you your leg. At the end of the day, it’s all their fault that this happened to you!”
Asher jabbed his finger at Evander’s face and shouted, “It was your loose lips today that put Evelina and her baby in danger If you want to save them, you’d better figure out how to make Lemira happy.”
“Asher, you really aren’t going to help?”
“There’s nothing I can do.”
A bitter smile crossed Asher’s lips.
He knew he’d made terrible
mistakes over the years. Now if he wanted to get to the bottom of what happened back then, he’d have to rely on Lemira.
What’s more, deep down he knew he owed her.
He wanted to make things right with Lemira, so when it came to matters like this, he
had no intention of standing in her way.
Lemira caught Asher’s words and felt a tinge of irony, but she knew this was her opportunity.
After all, this return to the Langston family-she had other reasons for coming back.
Lemira fixed her gaze on Evelina. “You keep claiming you know nothing, but you hid the fact that your father had cosmetic surgery!”
Evelina went pale as a sheet. How did Lemira find that out?
