The Alpha’s Unclaimed Mate Chapter 402

Chapter 402 Daddy Drakenfell Intended To Stay

The doors at the top of the arena opened.

Tiberon Drakenfell descended the steps with the unhurried authority of a man who had been commanding rooms since before the people in them were born. His eyes moved across the arena floor in a single sweep: Serena, blade in hand, breathing hard, hair plastered to her forehead. Thane and Calder, both carrying the posture of men who had been working and were satisfied with the work. Hale against the wall. Elara in the front row.

He gave Thane a nod. Gave Calder the same.

Both captains returned the nod and stepped back from the floor.

Serena’s grip tightened on the blade. Her red eyes widened by a fraction, the surprise visible before she could mask it, because King Tiberon Drakenfell walking into a secondary training arena and nodding her captains off the floor was a sequence of events she had failed to anticipate and was rapidly trying to interpret.

“Your Majesty, I—”

“I am taking over your training.” Tiberon stopped at the edge of the floor. His voice was flat, declarative, carrying no apology and no preamble. “Dexmon and Finnick have been removed from all sessions. Their wolves cannot function in proximity to yours during a shift, and the matebond feedback is preventing you from training effectively. The problem is biological, it is predictable, and it is solved by removing them from the equation.”

She blinked, surprised by the bluntness.

He stepped onto the floor.

“You cannot initiate a shift on your own. Your wolf cannot walk without shaking. Your shift takes twelve seconds, which is eight seconds too long for a combat scenario. You bleed from the nose after every transition, which indicates your body is absorbing the shift as trauma rather than processing it as a function. These are facts. They are fixable. They require time and repetition, and you have four days of the first and zero tolerance for excuses on the second.”

Serena stood very still. The blade hung at her side. Her chin was level, but the tension in her jaw said she was bracing for the rest of it, for the part where the assessment became a verdict.

Tiberon looked at her.

The look shifted.

It was a small shift. Imperceptible to anyone who had known Tiberon Drakenfell for less than a decade. The posture remained rigid, the expression remained controlled, and the voice that followed carried the same commanding register. But the temperature changed by one degree, and the degree was the difference between a king addressing a soldier and a father addressing the woman his son loved.

“Serena. I have trained wolves for thirty years. I built the Drakenfell military from a regional force into the most disciplined army on the continent, and I did it by identifying what each wolf was and building a strategy around the wolf I had, rather than wishing for the wolf I wanted.”

He clasped his hands behind his back.

“Some of the strongest wolves I have ever trained started as the weakest. Wolves who shifted late. Wolves who were undersized. Wolves who came to me with damage that the other trainers had already written off. I did not write them off because weakness at the start is information, and information is more valuable than strength. Strength without direction is just force. Direction without strength will find its own force eventually.”

Serena’s jaw loosened by a fraction.

“Your wolf is small. Your wolf shakes when she stands. Your wolf was silver-poisoned for a year and deprived of a pack for six, and despite all of that, your wolf bonded a dragon, survived two battles, and just terrified a Shadowclaw captain into removing chicken from his training protocol.”

The corner of his mouth moved. It was not a smile. Tiberon Drakenfell did not smile during training assessments. It was an acknowledgment that the sentence had contained something close to humor and he was permitting it to land.

“Your wolf will have Alpha speed. That is genetic, and genetics do not care about your current limitations. Your wolf will eventually channel your magic, which makes her one of the most dangerous tactical assets on this continent once the integration is complete. Those advantages are coming. They are inevitable. But advantages without instincts are weapons without hands to hold them.”

He stepped closer.

“This is your window. Right now, while your wolf is learning to walk, you learn the instincts. Footwork. Positioning. Threat assessment. Reading multiple opponents, which Captain Thane tells me you were doing five minutes ago with considerable competence. These instincts will be the foundation that your speed and magic build on, and the wolves who learn instincts before they learn power are the wolves who survive, because power fails and instincts do not.”

Serena exhaled. The exhale was long and carried the compressed weight of a woman who had been expecting criticism and had received a blueprint instead.

“As for your mates.” Tiberon’s voice shifted into a register that was dryer, carrying the faintest edge of paternal exasperation. “I have instructed them to stay away from the training floor until further notice. Consider it a gift. I have commanded armies in three wars and I have never encountered a strategic problem as unnecessary as two Alpha wolves arguing about saliva jurisdiction.”

Elara pressed her lips together so hard they disappeared.

Hale looked at the ceiling.

Serena’s mouth twitched. The twitch was involuntary, small, and the first movement her face had made in Tiberon’s presence that was not anxiety or deference. It was close to a laugh. Close enough.

Tiberon saw it. He did not acknowledge it, because acknowledging it would embarrass her and the purpose of the comment had been to disarm her, and the disarming had worked, and that was sufficient.

“Captain Thane. Captain Calder.” He looked over his shoulder. “We are cutting her shifting time in half by the end of the day. Let’s make that happen.”

Both captains stepped back onto the floor.

Tiberon moved to the wall where Hale was standing. He positioned himself beside the Beta with his hands clasped behind his back and his eyes on Serena, and the positioning communicated to every person in the arena that the King of Drakenfell was here, the King was watching, and the King intended to stay.
