The Alpha’s Unclaimed Mate Chapter 474

Chapter 474

Petra stepped forward with the smooth professionalism of a woman who had been Bellatrix’s servant long enough to recognize when her queen was buffering.

“Yes, Princess. She had them prepared for you both.”

Serena moved. Fast. Before Bellatrix could prepare, before Petra could intercept, before the queen’s personal space perimeter could activate its defense systems, Serena crossed the three feet between them and hugged her.

Bellatrix went rigid.

Board-stiff. Every muscle locked. Her arms stayed at her sides. Her chin lifted above Serena’s head. Her spine became a column of compressed resistance, a woman whose body was receiving physical affection from her daughter-in-law and whose body’s response was the physical equivalent of a computer encountering a file type it had never been programmed to open.

Elara hugged her too.

From the other side. Both women, one on each flank, arms wrapped around a queen who was standing between them with the frozen posture of a woman being mugged by gratitude and whose mugging was ongoing and whose escape routes were blocked.

Bellatrix fought the urge.

The urge was strong.

The urge was to say something cutting, something sharp, something that would restore the power dynamic to its natural state where she was above and they were below and the distance between the two was maintained by her tongue and enforced by her tone.

The urge was instinct. The instinct was decades old. The instinct was the reason she had survived thirty years of court politics and a marriage to Tiberon Drakenfell and the instinct was screaming at her to deploy a comment that would end the hugging immediately.

She fought it. The fighting was visible. Petra could see it, the micro-twitch at the corner of Bellatrix’s mouth, the slight flare of her nostrils, the rigid set of her jaw.

The queen was composing and discarding remarks at a speed that would have impressed a military strategist. Each one arrived fully formed, razor-edged, and ready for deployment. Each one was dismissed before it reached her lips.

Onyx could see it too.

His gold eyes tracked the tension in Bellatrix’s shoulders with the focused attention of a dragon who had learned to read her body language and whose reading was producing a clear result: she needed assistance.

He chirped once. Then bolted across the parlor floor, skidding on the stone, and headbutted Bellatrix’s thigh with enough force to break the huddle.

Petra poured champagne. Fast. Four glasses filled with the efficient speed of an attendant performing emergency emotional triage, because champagne in hands meant arms occupied, and arms occupied meant the hugging would end naturally.

The natural ending would save her queen from having to end it herself, which would require either reciprocation or rejection.

Onyx demanded to be picked up. His chirping escalated from request to requirement, his front claws scratching at Bellatrix’s skirt with the persistent urgency of a dragon whose emotional support duties had been activated and whose activation was non-negotiable.

Bellatrix scooped him up. He settled on her hip. His purring started. The purring was a reset button, and the button was doing its job.

Serena and Elara didn’t notice the rescue operation. They had already released Bellatrix and turned to the dresses, pulled toward the fabric and the light and the impossible reality that wedding dresses with their names on them existed in a room they had entered expecting manipulation and found something else.

“Can we…” Elara began, her voice finding itself, her hand gesturing toward the dresses, the gesture carrying the specific hesitancy of a woman who wanted to touch them and was waiting for permission.

“Yes, obviously,” Bellatrix snapped.

Serena and Elara moved to the dresses.

Both of them. Hands reaching for fabric, fingers touching lace, the quiet absorption of two women standing in front of wedding gowns that had been made for them by a woman who had spent the last several months being their antagonist and whose antagonism had just produced the kindest thing either of them had experienced inside Drakenfell’s walls.

Bellatrix watched them from across the parlor, Onyx on her hip, champagne untouched, her expression cycling through a sequence that Petra had never seen in over a decade of service.

“The ivory will wash Serena out,” Bellatrix said. “With that hair and that skin, she needs the warm white. The third option is for Elara. Blue undertones suit darker complexions. I am right about this and will accept no debate.”

Elara and Serena laughed.

The laughter was real. Bellatrix had just delivered unsolicited fashion advice with the authority of a military commander issuing orders, and the advice was probably accurate, and the accuracy made it funnier.

Bellatrix stared at them.

Something shifted behind her eyes.

The shift was small. Internal. A woman who has spent her entire adult life surrounded by allies of convenience and enemies of strategy just watched two women laugh at something she said like they were enjoying themselves.

Agnes Viremont had vented. Bellatrix vented back at her. They traded grievances.

Agnes also cried. Frequently. About everything. Her rank, her prospects, her competition with Serena, her perceived slights from wolves who were too important to care about her feelings and too polite to say so.

The crying was exhausting. The exhausting was the tax Bellatrix paid for having a companion who agreed with her, and the tax was high, and the agreement was never interesting.

These two were different.

These two were laughing at her joke in her parlor while holding wedding dresses she had commissioned for them.

Neither of them was crying about rank or venting about rivals or seeking validation for cruelties. They were standing in her space, drinking her champagne, touching her dresses, and finding her funny.

Huh.

The recalibration contained an observation she was going to examine later, in private, with zero witnesses, and the observation was this: having people laugh at your jokes because your jokes were funny was different from having people agree with your cruelties because your cruelties were useful.

The different was. Nice.

She would never say that word. She would torch this parlor before she said that word.

But the word was there. Sitting in the back of her mind like a small, uninvited guest who had arrived without an invitation and was refusing to leave and whose refusal was, against every instinct Bellatrix possessed, welcome.
