The Alpha’s Unclaimed Mate Chapter 618

Chapter 618 The Girl She Always Was

Elara stopped shaking. The stopping was a decision made by a girl whose best friend was dying on cobblestones and whose grief had been overruled by necessity.

Charlie cleaned the wounds. Methodical. Thorough. The water turned pink, then red, then a color that had no name. He worked through the cloth, through the blood, through the specific, intimate horror of a healer whose hands were inside a child’s wounds and whose composure was the only thing standing between her and the infection that would kill her if the blood loss didn’t finish the job first.

“You’re going to be fine, Serena.” He said it the way a healer says it when the tone is as much medicine as the treatment. “This is going to hurt. But you’re going to be alive to complain about the pain, and alive is the only outcome I’m accepting tonight.”

Fin watched this captured healer Elara had called Charlie save her life with boiled water and clean linen and the sheer, stubborn refusal to let death win a fight he’d decided it was losing.

Fin liked this man. He didn’t know him. He’d never met him. But a healer who knelt in a child’s blood and protected her in a kingdom that would kill him for it had earned something from Finnick Shadowclaw that most men spent years trying to get and never received.

Respect. Immediate. Permanent. Non-negotiable.

The memory shifted.

Weeks compressed into minutes.

Fin watched Charlie take care of Serena and Elara the way a man watches a documentary about a saint and realizes halfway through that the saint was real and lived in a slave quarter and never asked for canonization.

Charlie worked double shifts. His own assignments during the day, whatever labor Viremont extracted from a healer whose skills were too valuable to waste on field work and too dangerous to let near anything important. Then, after his shifts ended, when the quarters went dark and the guards thinned, he crossed to the section where they kept the girls.

He brought food.

The food was his own. Fin could see it in the math. The portions that man carried were portions that had been subtracted from a ration that was already insufficient for a grown man doing manual labor. He was feeding himself less so he could feed them more, and the feeding was systematic, calculated, the specific caloric triage of a healer who understood that a body rebuilding from forty lashes needed more fuel than a body that was merely being worked to death.

Fin’s throat tightened. This man was starving himself to feed two girls he had no obligation to protect. No oath bound him. No matebond compelled him. No king ordered him. He did it because the girls were hungry and he had food and the math was that simple and that expensive.

He brought medicine.

Herbs that he gathered during work details, pocketed when the guards looked elsewhere, ground into poultices in his own quarters using tools he’d fashioned from scraps. The medicine was crude, improvised, the pharmacology of a man whose training had been designed for clinics and was being applied in a slave quarter with zero equipment and the threat of execution as a performance bonus.

Serena’s back was healing. Slowly. The healer changed the bandages every night, his fingers working in the dark without pause.

“Hold still.”

“It stings.”

“That is how you know it’s working. Medicine that feels pleasant is lying to you.”

“Everything you give me stings.”

“Then everything I give you is honest. You’re welcome.”

The exchange was quiet. Dry. Carrying the specific, understated warmth of two people whose sense of humor had been forged in the same fire and had come out blackened but functional. Serena still had her wit. Blunted by pain and exhaustion and the silver collar that was slowly poisoning her from the neck down, but present. Still sharp.

The healer heard it every time. Fin could see the way the man’s mouth twitched when she fired back, the almost-smile of a healer whose patient was giving him attitude, which meant the patient was alive, which meant the attitude was the best vital sign he’d checked all day.

“Elara says you gave her your bread again.”

“Elara is a spy.”

“Elara is correct. You are eating half of what I bring you and giving the other half to her.”

“She is hungrier than I am.”

“She is hungry because she is growing. You are hungry because you are healing, and healing requires more than growing, and I am telling you this as a healer whose professional opinion is that you eat the goddamn bread, Serena.”

Serena looked at him with green eyes that held the expression Fin had seen only a few times from her. The expression that said I have heard your position and I have decided my position is better and the deciding happened before you finished your sentence.

“I will eat the bread when Elara eats first.”

Charlie looked at the ceiling the way every healer in every kingdom has looked at a ceiling when the person they are trying to save is actively undermining the saving through sheer stubbornness and superior negotiating skills.

“You are going to be the death of me.”

“Viremont is going to be the death of all of us. But I appreciate the sentiment, Charlie.”

Fin let out a breath as he watched this. Of course she would say that. There she was. Even here. Even starving, collared, healing from forty lashes in a kingdom that wanted her dead. The stubbornness. The dry wit. The absolute, bone-deep refusal to eat before someone she loved had eaten first.

She had been this person her entire life. Before him. Before Dexmon. Before crowns and matebonds and volcanoes. She had been giving away her bread since before she had bread to give.

Charlie’s mouth twitched. The almost-smile. There and gone, a reflex he permitted himself in the dark when the guards were far enough away that a moment of warmth could exist without becoming a weapon used against them.
