The Alpha’s Unclaimed Mate Chapter 634

Chapter 634 The Problem With Raising Kings

“I know I am that person. I am the first, Father. The first wolf. The first shift. Every Fae who follows me into this will look to me for the answer to a question that nobody else can answer, and the question is whether this thing inside them is a curse or a blessing, and the answer I give them will define an entire species.”

The word Father had left his mouth without permission. He called Atlas Your Majesty in formal settings. He called him Father in private, and the private was a distinction he maintained with the rigid discipline of a boy whose gratitude for the title was so vast that using it carelessly would have diminished it.

He had used it now because the conversation required it. Because Your Majesty was a king receiving a report and Father was a man losing a son.

Atlas looked at him for a long time. The looking was the looking of a man whose blood-sense was reading every emotion Lucian was producing and whose reading was producing a story the boy was working very hard to keep off his face.

Fear. Guilt. Love. Determination. The determination was winning, but the winning was narrow, and the love was the thing making the margin so thin.

“You are asking me to accept that the boy I raised in this palace, the boy I chose, the boy whose future I have been building since the night he arrived in my arms, is walking away from everything I prepared for him.”

“I am asking you to understand that the boy you raised became something you could never have predicted, and the becoming requires a path that leads away from this palace.”

“Away from this palace.” Atlas repeated it. The repeating was the repeating of a man testing the weight of words and finding them heavier than the breath required to say them.

“I intend to reclaim Argenvael.”

Atlas’s chin lifted by a fraction. The fraction carried a decade of implications.

“My parents’ kingdom. The territory has been divided among four houses whose investment in it has been administrative rather than structural. The land is neglected. The people who remain are scattered. I have the legal claim as surviving heir, and I have wolves who need a home.”

“You have been planning this.”

“For several months.”

“And you chose to inform me after the planning was complete rather than during.”

The sentence was not a question. The sentence was a father recognizing, with the specific, wounded clarity of a man who had taught a boy to build arguments, that the boy had built this one without him. The exclusion was the wound. The wound was deliberate, and the deliberate was the part that Atlas couldn’t forgive quickly, because Lucian had always brought him the plans. Always. Since he was fourteen and dismantling political campaigns in three moves. The bringing was their language. The bringing was how they worked.

Lucian had built this plan alone.

“I did not want you to talk me out of it.”

The honesty detonated in the quiet study. Atlas blinked. The blinking was involuntary, the reflex of a man whose son had just handed him the most devastating compliment and the most devastating confession in the same sentence.

I did not want you to talk me out of it meant you are the only person whose opinion could change my mind and I cannot afford to have my mind changed and I love you enough that your disapproval is the one force I am unable to withstand, so I removed it from the equation before it could reach me.

Atlas stood. The standing was slow. He walked to the window and looked at the courtyard below, the courtyard where two boys had once hidden behind a fountain with a goat, the courtyard where a girl had climbed a wall and a boy had taught her to hold a sword and a family had been built out of choices rather than blood.

His back was to Lucian. The back was the only part of Atlas Aelindor that was permitted to show what his face could not, and Lucian watched his father’s shoulders carry something that was too heavy for a king and too personal for a conversation and too permanent for a room.

“When?” Atlas’s voice was steady. The steady was the most expensive composure Lucian had ever heard him produce.

“After Tristan’s wedding.”

“Tristan knows?”

“I have told him.”

“And his response?”

“He tried to convince me to stay. Then he tried to come with me. Then he accepted it, because Tristan accepts me the way he accepts weather. With complaints, but without resistance.”

The ghost of a sound left Atlas. It might have been a laugh. It might have been a breath. It might have been the noise a father makes when his son describes his brother with an accuracy that is both painful and perfect.

“You are building a kingdom for people who have been told they are broken.” Atlas said it to the window. To the courtyard. To the memory of a boy in borrowed clothes whose kingdom had fallen and whose parents had died and whose survival had been a gift another man paid for. “You are building the thing I built for you.”

Lucian’s throat closed. The closing was total, sudden, the ambush of an emotion he had locked behind his teeth for the entire conversation and whose lock had just been picked by a man who knew where every lock was because the man had installed most of them.

“Yes,” he managed. The word was small. Insufficient. Carrying the weight of a boy who had been given a home and was leaving it to give homes to others and whose leaving was the highest compliment he could pay the man who had made the leaving possible.

Atlas turned from the window. His face was composed. His eyes were bright, and the brightness was the particular brightness that Fae eyes produced when the emotion behind them exceeded the face’s capacity to contain it.

“I did not raise you to stay, Lucian.” His voice cracked on the name, hairline, barely audible, the fracture line in a foundation that had been holding for seventeen years. “I raised you to become the man who stood in front of me tonight and told me, with my own logic and my own strategies and my own tactical framework, that he was leaving to do the thing I taught him to do.”
