The Alpha’s Unclaimed Mate Chapter 643

Chapter 643 Never Demote A Wolf’s Mate

Tristan made it four steps past the chamber doors before his knees hit the stone.

A dark vein crawled up the side of his neck. The corruption rooted itself beneath his skin, branching at his jaw, forking toward his ear.

Lucian caught him.

The wolf king moved faster than the guards, faster than the healers, faster than the door had time to close behind them. His arms went around Tristan’s chest and his knees hit the ground a half second after the prince’s, taking the weight, absorbing the collapse the way a foundation absorbs a falling wall.

“Easy. I’ve got you.” Lucian’s voice was steady. The steadiness cost him something Fin could feel through the vision, a tax paid in heartbeats and adrenaline. “Breathe.”

Tristan’s eyes rolled. Green light erupted from his palms in jagged, uncontrolled bursts that scorched the walls and shattered a window fifteen feet away. Lucian held through it. The Fae magic that detonated from Tristan’s hands burned the skin on Lucian’s forearms and he didn’t flinch, didn’t move, didn’t release, because releasing his brother was the one thing the Alpha of the Northern Realm would never do regardless of the price his body paid for holding.

“River!” Tristan’s voice was wrong. Thin. Scraped hollow.

“She’s safe,” Lucian said. “Focus on breathing.”

Guards arrived. Healers arrived. Lucian transferred Tristan’s weight to the medical team with the efficiency of a battlefield commander who understood triage and the reluctance of a man whose arms had been the only thing between his brother and the ground.

He stepped back. His burned forearms were already healing, wolf regeneration closing the wounds in real time, but the scars would stay for hours, and the hours would be a reminder that Fae magic and wolf skin were incompatible and that holding Tristan through a detonation was a sacrifice his body paid in pain.

Fin looked at the burns. Then at Lucian’s face, which carried zero acknowledgment of them.

“You stubborn son of a bitch,” Fin said, with something closer to reverence than judgment.

The vision compressed again. Hours folded. When it opened, Lucian was standing outside the council chamber doors, one shoulder against the wall, close enough to hear and far enough to deny listening.

Inside, Elder Vareth was speaking.

“…take a second wife. Crown the fated tie, as the Moon Goddess intended. The chosen mate may retain her position in the household, with dignity, with respect…”

Second wife.

Lucian’s body went rigid.

Every wolf instinct in his body erupted simultaneously, a detonation of protective fury so violent his vision tinted gold at the edges. The suggestion wasn’t aimed at him. The conversation wasn’t about him. The woman they were discussing relegating to “second” was the woman his matebond connected to, and the suggestion that she be demoted from wife to accessory was a blade that hit his wolf in the exact place where the word MATE lived.

Lucian’s fist clenched. He unclenched it. The discipline was so deeply grooved it was automatic, twenty years of practice turning impulse into composure through sheer force of repetition.

Then the sound came from inside the chamber.

Small. Involuntary. A breath pulled inward too sharply, caught behind fingers, swallowed before it could become the thing it wanted to become.

River.

She was in the chamber. Back row. Lucian hadn’t known. His wolf hadn’t scented her through the stone, and the matebond had been delivering a steady low-frequency grief that he’d assumed was ambient, the background hum of a woman who had been grieving since the ceremony. He hadn’t realized she was thirty feet away, sitting small, hands over her mouth, receiving the words “second wife” in real time.

Her grief detonated through the matebond.

It hit Lucian like a battering ram. His back slammed against the corridor wall, his hand going to his chest, his breath leaving him in a rush that he couldn’t control. The magnitude was staggering. This was the grief of a woman who had spent her entire life being told she didn’t belong and was hearing it confirmed by the highest authority in the kingdom.

His wolf howled.

The sound was internal but so loud it vibrated through Fin’s vision, a frequency that carried the particular devastation of a wolf hearing its mate in pain and being unable to reach her because the door was closed and the door would always be closed because the door was the lie he had built his entire life around.

Inside the chamber, Atlas’s voice boomed like thunder.

“My daughter will never be a second wife to any king. She is a princess of this realm and will have the crown afforded to her.”

Lucian exhaled. The exhale shook.

“With the deepest respect, Your Majesty,” Elder Vareth’s voice carried through the door, “she is a princess by adoption. She is your chosen daughter, loved and valued, but the bloodline of the crown—”

“Finish that sentence.” Atlas’s voice went low. “Finish it, Vareth. Tell me what she is. Tell me what the girl I found starving and branded and unnamed on my palace floor, the girl I raised and crowned and loved as my own blood, tell me what she is in your estimation. Finish the sentence so I can finish this conversation.”

Silence.

River’s grief pulsed through the matebond in waves so deep Lucian’s knees buckled. He slid down the corridor wall until he was sitting on the floor, legs extended, palms flat against the stone, receiving his mate’s devastation at full volume through a connection that had zero volume control and zero mute button and zero mercy.

Her Fae magic carried it outward. Fin felt the pulse move through the stone beneath him, through the walls, through the door, a pressure wave of pure grief that settled into the chests of every Fae in the chamber.

Through the door, Lucian heard the room go silent. Heard the conversations halt. Heard the arguments die. He felt every elder in that room receive River’s grief through her magic, and the feeling was a fraction of what the matebond was delivering to him, and the fraction was enough to stop nine old men mid-sentence.

He pressed his forehead to his knees.
