The Alpha’s Unclaimed Mate Chapter 601

Chapter 601 Ronan Dropped The Elephant

The green light settled into Serena’s body like rain into parched soil. Gavriel could feel it working, could feel her insides unclenching, the burns cooling, the raw places smoothing over. His magic moved through her with the easy, instinctive certainty of water finding cracks.

His eyes were on Dexmon and Fin. Both still golden. Both still standing on the shore like matching monuments to something he didn’t have a name for. His attention stayed there for three seconds, four, five, trying to make the math work on why his two friends looked like they were sharing a brain.

Then something tugged.

His focus snapped back to Serena so fast she flinched.

There it was again. His magic had seeped deeper without his permission, the way it had on Volcano island, sinking past the injuries and the fatigue into the architecture underneath, and something was wrong down there. Something that didn’t belong.

It felt like a weed.

Tangled into her magic at the root level, wrapped around the base of something vital, feeding. He could feel it leeching off her reserves the way a parasite feeds off a host, quiet and patient and getting less quiet by the hour. His instinct screamed pull it. Rip it out. His magic was already curling around the base of it, ready to yank.

He stopped.

Because underneath the weed were roots. Extensive, deep, threaded through Serena’s magic like veins through muscle, and the roots didn’t belong to the weed. They belonged to her. To her wolf. The two systems were so entangled he couldn’t tell where the sickness ended and Serena began, and pulling the weed meant pulling the roots, and pulling the roots meant pulling something out of Serena that might not grow back.

She was healing. But the healing was wrong. Her wolf was involved and her wolf was making it worse, and the thing that was draining her was accelerating, feeding faster, growing bolder, like it knew the clock was running and was trying to finish before anyone noticed.

Gavriel opened his mouth.

“I feel it too.”

Dexmon’s voice. The dragon king’s cadence. Calm. Ancient. Unsurprised. Like a man confirming a weather report he’d already read.

“We will both look at her after she lies down.”

Gavriel’s head turned back to Dexmon. Slowly. The way a person turns toward a sound they’re not sure they actually heard.

He’d seen the dragon king before many times. But it was always a sentence here, a gesture there, a flicker of something ancient behind Dexmon’s eyes that surfaced like a whale and dove again before anyone could get a good look. The dragon king didn’t linger. He arrived, delivered whatever cryptic message the universe required, and left.

He was still here.

Still standing. Still speaking. Still wearing Dexmon like a suit he’d decided to keep on for the afternoon. And now he was giving medical directives about Serena’s magical parasite like he had a standing appointment.

Gavriel looked at Fin. Same gold eyes. Same ancient passenger. Looked back at Dexmon.

Then it pulsed again.

Gavriel felt it ripple through her like a tremor under still ground, the weed flexing, tightening, pulling at her reserves with a hunger that was getting harder to ignore. Serena’s magic dipped. Visibly. The green light in the water flickered like a lamp running low on oil.

On the shore, Dexmon’s golden eyes locked onto Serena at the same moment Gavriel’s did. The same instinct. The same alarm. Two completely different men feeling the same wrong at the same time.

“Serena?”

“Natalia?”

In unison. Gavriel from the lake, Dexmon from the shoreline. Two names for the same woman layered on top of each other like a chord played on two different instruments.

Serena’s eyes went glassy.

Gavriel was already moving. He had her before her knees buckled, one arm under her legs, one behind her back, hauling her up out of the water and against his chest in a single motion that sent a wave rolling across the lake.

“Nope. We’re not passing out. We’re done passing out today.”

Her head lolled against his shoulder. She blinked twice, slow and unfocused, then seemed to find her way back to the surface. “I’m fine.”

Gavriel looked down at her.

The look he gave her was the flattest thing in the underground chamber. Flatter than the water. Flatter than the stone floor. The kind of look that communicated an entire medical evaluation in a single expression and found every result wanting.

“Serena. You are bleeding out of your goddamn eye.”

“It stopped.”

“That is not the win you think it is.”

They stayed like that. Serena didn’t fight it.

Gavriel held her in the water and didn’t move. The green light pulsed gently around them, doing what it could, and he let it work because rushing meant putting her down and putting her down was not on his agenda for the foreseeable future. His arms were locked under her like load-bearing walls, and his expression dared anyone in the chamber to suggest he adjust his grip.

On the shore, Dexmon stood with his weight forward on the balls of his feet, golden eyes tracking every micro-movement Gavriel made with the laser focus of a man prepared to cross twenty feet of water in under a second if Serena’s altitude changed by so much as an inch. His hands were slightly open at his sides. Ready. The posture of a dead king who did not fully trust the living with his priorities.

Fin was silent. His golden eyes were on Gavriel, watching him hold Serena with an expression that was harder to read than the other two. Something was moving behind that borrowed gaze. Something that looked at Gavriel and saw more than a wolf holding a girl in a lake.

Minutes passed. The water stilled. Serena’s color improved in increments, the gray in her face retreating like a tide pulling back from a shore.

Gavriel carried her out.

The water streamed off both of them as he walked up the shallow bank, boots squelching against stone, arms unchanged, grip unchanged, face unchanged. He carried her like she weighed nothing and like putting her down was a concept he’d heard of but hadn’t personally endorsed.

“Gav.” Serena’s voice was tired but functional. “I’m okay to walk.”

He looked down at her. Kept walking.

“The last time you said that, you ate dirt. I’m not running a study, Serena. The results are in.”

Fin’s golden eyes moved to Gavriel. Then to Dexmon. Back to Gavriel. Something was being measured.

“He can’t feel it.” Ronan’s voice through Fin’s mouth, directed at the dragon king behind Dexmon’s eyes. “She marked the other two. Not him.”

The dragon king’s golden eyes shifted to Fin. A conversation passed between them in the silence, ancient and private, the kind of exchange between two men who had been dead long enough to stop wasting words.

Serena’s face turned the color of a pomegranate. Alaric pretended not to hear. Elara’s eyes widened.

“He is blind,” Dexmon agreed.

“He screamed at her to get the hell out and he doesn’t even know she’s dying, Asher.”

The last sentence landed like a coffin lid.
