The Alpha’s Unclaimed Mate Chapter 624

Chapter 624 Before They Became Legends

The tower fell. The prince laughed. And somewhere in the rubble of carved wooden blocks and a one-year-old’s total lack of remorse, a friendship began that would outlast kingdoms, outrun death, and somehow still end up in an argument about a girl.

But before the girl, before the argument, before any of it, there was a palace with floors too slippery and a prince with a laugh too loud and a baby who had no idea what he was.

Fin watched himself grow in fragments. A toddler learning to walk on marble floors that were too polished for small feet and produced spectacular wipeouts that the palace staff learned to anticipate and the palace prince learned to laugh at.

The palace prince was Tristan Aelindor.

Fin saw him at four. Small. Carrying an energy that was already too large for his body, the particular restlessness of a child whose personality had arrived ahead of schedule and whose frame was struggling to contain it. Tristan moved through the palace the way a spark moves through kindling, fast, bright, leaving minor damage in his wake.

The first time the two boys were placed together was unremarkable by any standard except the one that mattered.

A woman set toddler Lucian on the floor of the nursery where Tristan was building a tower out of carved wooden blocks with the focused intensity of an architect whose structural engineering was ambitious and whose materials were inadequate.

Lucian crawled to him. Tristan looked at the crawler. The crawler looked at the tower.

Lucian knocked it over.

The destruction was total, instantaneous, and committed without a shred of remorse. Lucian had seen a vertical structure and decided it was wrong about being vertical.

Tristan’s face cycled through four emotions in two seconds: shock, outrage, grief for the tower, and then something else. Something that arrived last and stayed longest. He looked at the boy sitting in the wreckage of his tower with wooden blocks scattered around him, and he grinned.

“Do it again.”

Lucian obliged. He would spend the next decade obliging.

Atlas watched from the doorway. The blood-sense that allowed him to feel the emotions of his children was reading two signals instead of one, the familiar green of Tristan’s delight and something else, something gold and quiet and deep, radiating from the toddler in the rubble.

The gold was different from anything his blood-sense had encountered. It wasn’t Fae. It wasn’t the green that ran through every Fae bloodline, the emerald current that powered their magic and defined their species. This was something else. Something that his magic recognized as foreign and his instincts recognized as significant and his experience recognized as a problem he was going to need help with.

He could feel Lucian’s power. It was there, unmistakable, a presence in the boy’s blood that was growing with every year. But he couldn’t draw it. Every technique he knew for coaxing Fae magic to the surface, every exercise designed to encourage manifestation in young Fae, every approach that had worked with Tristan and had worked with every other Fae child in the recorded history of his court, failed with Lucian.

The power acknowledged him. It acknowledged his attempts. It acknowledged his authority as king and his Fae blood.

Then it declined to cooperate with the polite but absolute refusal of a thing that was waiting for a different invitation.

AELINDRIS — TEMPLE OF THE MOON GODDESS

Atlas took the boy to the temple on a morning when the mist sat low across the palace grounds and the air carried the mineral coolness that preceded rain.

Lucian was six. Walking beside the king with the easy, unselfconscious stride of a child who had been raised in a palace and considered the king’s company normal rather than extraordinary. His gold eyes moved across the temple’s exterior.

The temple was ancient. White stone, open to the sky on three sides, a crescent altar carved from a single piece of moonstone that caught the morning light and held it the way a cupped hand holds water. The architecture predated the palace by centuries, the first structure the Fae had built in Aelindris and the last one they would ever abandon.

The priestess was waiting.

She was old in the way that Fae priestesses were old, which is to say, the age was visible in her bearing rather than her face. Silver eyes watched them approach from beneath white robes, her hands clasped with a composed stillness that said she had known they were coming before they arrived, and the knowing was the first indication that this visit was going to produce information Atlas wasn’t prepared for.

“Your Majesty.” She inclined her head. “And the boy.”

“His power is present and refuses to manifest.” Atlas’s tone was the one he used for generals and specialists, clipped, precise, already past pleasantries. “I have attempted every approach I know. The magic is there. I can feel it in his blood. It responds to nothing I do.”

“Because it is waiting for something you cannot provide.”

Atlas absorbed that the way he absorbed every piece of information that rearranged his understanding, with complete stillness and zero visible reaction.

The priestess knelt in front of Lucian. Her silver eyes found his gold ones, and the meeting of the two colors produced something in the air between them, a frequency that Fin, standing invisible behind the altar, felt in his ribs.

She studied the boy for a long time. Long enough that Lucian, who had been standing with patient obedience, began shifting his weight from foot to foot. Six-year-old tolerance for standing still has an engineering limit, and his had been reached.

“He was chosen, Your Majesty.”

“Chosen.” Atlas repeated the word the way kings repeat words that carry weight they haven’t finished measuring.

“By the Moon Goddess.” The priestess stood. Her silver eyes moved from the boy to the king, heavy with what she was about to say. “The power you feel is real. It is ancient. And it is waiting because the mechanism through which it manifests does not exist in the Fae tradition.”

“Then what tradition does it belong to?”
