The Alpha’s Unclaimed Mate Chapter 612

Chapter 612 The Weight Of Two Lockets

A shape burst from a side corridor.

Garrett Darkhowler.

Young. Fifteen, maybe sixteen. Built like a man already but wearing the face of a boy who was processing too many things at the speed of war. He was carrying a sword that was too big for his frame and running at a speed that said training had already made him dangerous even if experience hadn’t finished the job.

Elara was behind him. Smaller. Thirteen maybe. Moving with the coordinated precision of a girl who had been trained alongside Serena since childhood and whose training was currently the only thing standing between her body and the panic trying to override it.

Garrett hit the tunnel entrance. The gold barrier Seraphine had placed was still holding, hardened amber blocking the corridor.

“Serena!”

He hit it with his shoulder. It cracked. He hit it again. It shattered.

Serena was on the other side. Curled against the tunnel wall, knees to her chest, face buried in her arms, shoulders shaking with sobs so violent they were silent. The crying had exceeded sound. The crying had gone to a place where noise was insufficient and the body just convulsed.

The locket was in her hand. Clutched in fingers so small the chain wrapped twice around her fist. She had gotten it somehow. Before the gold barrier threw her into the tunnel, before the entrance sealed, she had gotten her mother’s locket, and she was holding it against her chest the way her mother had taught her to.

When you are scared, hold yours, and know that wherever I am, I am holding mine and thinking of you.

Fin’s chest cracked.

The crystalline floor was littered with debris, shattered ice, fragments of architecture, the accumulated wreckage of a kingdom in the process of dying.

Something flashed gold on the ground that didn’t belong. His legs moved on their own.

A white gold chain and the pendant. The matching locket. Seraphine’s half.

His hand reached for it.

His fingers closed around it.

Solid. Warm. Real in his grip in a way that nothing else in this memory was real. His hand didn’t pass through. The chain settled against his palm with weight, actual weight, the specific gravity of gold that had been worn against a woman’s chest for years and still carried her warmth.

Fin stared at it.

He reached into his jacket with his other hand. The ruined locket was there. Blackened. Warped. The remains of Serena’s half, pulled from Guinevere’s fire, carried in his pocket since that night because discarding it would have meant agreeing with the destruction and he refused.

Two lockets. One whole. One destroyed. Two halves of a set that had been designed to exist in pairs.

He closed his fist around Seraphine’s locket and put it in the pocket beside the other one. The weight of them together was almost nothing. The weight of what they meant was the heaviest thing he’d ever carried.

Garrett found Serena. He scooped her off the tunnel floor with one arm, the other holding the sword, and ran.

“We go south,” Garrett said. “Serena, hold onto me. Elara, stay on my hip.”

The girl couldn’t speak. Her arms went around Garrett’s neck with the grip of a child whose world had been reduced to the body carrying her, and her face buried against his shoulder, and the locket was still in her fist, pressed between her chest and his.

They ran.

The tunnel emptied onto a mountainside. The air hit Fin like a wall, cold and thin and carrying the distant sounds of a kingdom being dismantled behind them. Red Death was visible above the city walls, a crimson ceiling descending in slow, deliberate layers.

Then Fin heard something that turned his blood to ice.

Behind the Red Death. Behind the dark magic. Behind the tactical architecture of the invasion. A sound that didn’t belong to wolves or Fae or any species that operated under the jurisdiction of the sun.

Shrieking.

The pitch was wrong. The frequency was wrong. The sound came from throats designed to produce fear as a weapon, vocal cords that had been warped by darkness into instruments whose sole purpose was to announce that something worse than death had arrived.

Vampires.

They poured over Frostborne’s eastern wall in a tide of bodies that moved wrong. Too fast. Too angular. Joints bending in directions that geometry hadn’t approved. They swarmed through streets that the Dark Fae had already cleared, and the difference between the two forces was the difference between a blade and a plague. The Dark Fae killed with purpose. The vampires killed with appetite.

Fin watched it happen from the mountainside and his stomach turned so violently he tasted copper.

This wasn’t a battle. This wasn’t even a conquest. This was extermination. The vampires were unleashed into a city whose defenders were already dying, whose shields were already broken, whose queen was already bleeding out on a crystalline courtyard floor. The timing was calculated to ensure maximum exposure and minimum resistance.

A voice cut through the destruction. Deep. Resonant. Amplified by magic so powerful it reached every corner of the kingdom and carried beyond the walls to the mountains where three children were running.

“Enjoy damnation, Haldor.”

The High Emperor of Orosia.

The voice was calm. Conversational. The tone of a man addressing a colleague rather than a city he was feeding to the damned. The words carried the specific cruelty of a man who wanted the dying to hear who was responsible and the responsible to hear himself credited.

Frostborne’s gates sealed.

Massive ice walls rose from the ground, closing every exit, every tunnel, every bolt-hole the kingdom’s architects had ever designed. The sealing was comprehensive, systematic, the work of magic so powerful it rewrote the city’s infrastructure in real time. Every escape route that had been built to save citizens was now the mechanism that trapped them.

The kingdom became a coffin.

And inside it, vampires fed and damned innocent souls.

Fin stood on the mountainside and watched in horror as a kingdom died. He heard the screams carry through ice walls that were too thick for the living to breach and too thin for the sound to stop.
