The Alpha’s Unclaimed Mate Chapter 665

Chapter 665 Half Wolf, Half Fae

Lucian left before she sat down.

He walked down the gallery stairs and through the eastern corridor and past the columns and into the garden where the salt wind hit his face.

That night, the dark veins returned on Tristan’s forearms. Two thin lines. The emotional distance his anger at Vesper had created was enough to trigger the corruption’s return.

That did it.

Lucian was done watching.

The decision didn’t arrive the way his other decisions arrived, through deliberation, through strategy, through the careful, disciplined analysis that had governed his life since he was old enough to understand that impulse was a luxury someone like him couldn’t afford. This decision arrived the way weather arrives: suddenly, totally, with zero interest in waiting for permission.

River was coming home with him.

He found her in the wild garden. The one behind the library. The one where flowers grew without permission and trees did whatever they wanted. A place that operated outside the palace’s rules, which was probably why she was there: a woman whose life had been rewritten by rules sitting in the one place that ignored them.

She was on the stone ledge. Alone. Knees pulled up. Arms wrapped around them. White hair loose, falling around her face in a curtain that was doing the job her composure couldn’t: hiding the evidence.

She was crying. The quiet kind. The kind she had learned before she had a name.

Lucian didn’t announce himself.

He crossed the garden in four strides, sat beside her on the ledge, and pulled her into his arms.

The contact detonated through the matebond. Two channels again. Her body against his, warm, shaking, carrying the physical evidence of a woman whose reserves were empty. The matebond delivering the emotional truth beneath the shaking: she was exhausted, she was lonely, she was being erased by increments, and the erosion had reached the foundation.

River stiffened for a fraction of a second. The warmth of him was steady and solid and carrying a quality that her grief recognized as safe, and the stiffness dissolved, and she let herself be held.

Her defenses dropped. Her composure released. The flat endurance frequency that had been her signal for weeks opened up, and underneath it was the full, ragged spectrum of a woman who had been holding herself together with her bare hands and whose hands had just been given permission to let go.

She cried against his chest. The crying was louder than her usual crying, the volume a function of safety rather than volume control. She was louder because she felt safe, and the safety was his arms, and the arms were trembling because the man providing the safety was receiving every shade of her grief at full bandwidth through a connection that amplified skin contact into something that bordered on unbearable.

He didn’t say anything. He held her while she cried, and the silence between them was the silence of two people who had known each other since childhood and understood that words were sometimes the least useful thing a person could offer.

Fin watched from the garden wall.

“Tell her,” Fin said. “This is the moment. This is where you stop holding and start talking.”

When the crying slowed, Lucian helped her stand. “Walk with me.”

They walked through the wild garden. Past the wall where a boy had taught a girl to climb. Past the formal gardens. Past the library. Down the path that led to the lower terraces where the sea wind was strong enough to carry the salt inland and the light was the particular gold that only existed in the hour before sunset.

Lucian stopped at the terrace wall. He leaned against it. His gold eyes moved to the horizon, then to her, then back to the horizon.

The rhythm of a man building the courage to say the thing he’d been holding.

“Can I tell you something?”

River wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. “Of course.”

Four seconds of silence. The four longest seconds Fin had ever witnessed, because in those four seconds, Lucian Moon was dismantling the architecture of a life built on silence, brick by brick, wall by wall, with his bare hands and no guarantee that the thing standing beneath the architecture would survive the demolition.

“The truth is, I have been miserable for a long time.”

The first brick fell.

“Because I fell in love with my best friend’s chosen tie. A girl I’ve known since we were children. A girl I found on a rock by a river when I was a boy, and I have been in love with her since that afternoon, and I have never said it aloud until right now.”

The wall came down.

Through the matebond, Lucian felt River’s reaction in real time. Surprise, hitting him with the force of a wave. Her pink eyes widening by a fraction. Her lips parting. Her mind, sharp and fast, already running through memories, re-examining every interaction through a lens she hadn’t known existed.

The re-examination was changing the color of everything, and Lucian could feel the colors shifting through the matebond the way a painter can feel pigment drying: slowly, irreversibly, each layer replacing the one beneath it.

“And that girl,” he continued, and his voice dropped into a register that belonged to confessions and prayers, “I found out at her bonding ceremony, that she was my fated tie too. She had no idea.”

River stared at him. The wind moved her white hair across her face and she didn’t push it back. Through the matebond, her surprise was reorganizing itself into understanding, and the understanding was vast, and the vastness was changing the shape of everything she thought she knew about the man standing in front of her.

“Are you sure?” Her voice was careful. “There has never been a fated tie between wolves and Fae. Fated ties are purely a Fae mechanism.”

“I know they are separate. I also know what I felt at that altar.” His gold eyes held hers. “Your scent hit me, and my wolf said one word, and the word was mate, and the word has been the only thing he has said since. I can’t explain the mechanism, River. I am part Fae and part wolf, and neither half has ever agreed on anything until you walked down that aisle, and both halves said the same thing at the same time, and they have been saying it every second since.”
