The Alpha’s Unclaimed Mate Chapter 633

Chapter 633 Disappointment Cuts Deeper

Tristan considered it. “I’ll go with you, actually.”

Lucian looked at him. “You just said you weren’t.”

“I changed my mind. Someone has to be there to identify the body.”

“He’s not going to kill me.”

Tristan gave a single nod. “He’s not going to kill you.”

“He is going to kill me.”

“He is absolutely going to kill you,” Tristan agreed.

Tristan leaned back against the wall, crossed his arms, and gave him the exact expression of a spectator settling into a comfortable seat at an arena. “You’re going to be great in there. I believe in you. I’ll be thinking of you. From here.”

AELINDRIS — THE FAE PALACE — THREE MONTHS AFTER THE FIRST SHIFT

Tristan abandoned ship before Lucian entered the study, the room where Atlas conducted the business of being a father when the business required a desk between them.

Lucian had been in this room hundreds of times. For lectures about the honey pastry theft. For conversations about River’s protection that were clinical and brief. For the quiet, steady exchanges that a king had with his sons when the exchanges required walls and privacy and the particular acoustics of a room designed to contain things that shouldn’t leave it.

He had never walked into this room afraid.

He was afraid now. The fear was sitting in his chest the way his wolf sat in his chest, heavy and present and occupying space he needed for breathing. He had rehearsed this conversation eleven times, which was nine more than he’d rehearsed anything in his life, and the rehearsing had accomplished nothing because the rehearsing couldn’t simulate the part that was going to hurt.

Atlas was behind the desk. Reading. The particular posture of a king whose reading was governance and whose governance was reading and whose evening routine involved both in quantities that would have hospitalized a lesser administrator.

He looked up when Lucian entered. The looking was warm. The warmth was the warmth he’d carried since a corridor and a baby and a decision that had never required discussion.

“Sit down, Lucian.”

Lucian sat. The sitting was wrong. His spine was too straight. His hands were too still. His jaw was doing the thing it did when the words behind it were heavy and the heavy was structural rather than emotional, and Atlas, who had been reading this boy’s face since it was the size of his palm, noticed immediately.

“What is it?”

Lucian had planned to build to it. Planned to lay the groundwork, present the reasoning, construct the argument the way he constructed every argument, with foundations and supports and a conclusion that arrived through logic rather than announcement.

The plan collapsed on contact with his father’s face.

“I am leaving the academy.”

Five words. Delivered with the flat, controlled cadence of a man ripping a bandage off a wound and hoping the speed would reduce the pain. It did neither. The words sat in the study the way a blade sits in a wound, present and producing damage and impossible to ignore.

Atlas set down his documents. The setting-down was slow. Deliberate. The motion of a man giving his hands something to do while his face processed information that required processing time.

“Leaving,” he repeated.

“The Fae curriculum has nothing left to offer me.” Lucian’s voice was steady. The steadiness was costing him more than any silence he had ever maintained, because silence was easy compared to saying the thing that was going to disappoint the man who had given him everything. “My magic manifested outside the Fae tradition. Every exercise, every workshop, every approach the academy offers is designed for a signature I was born with and never received. I have spent three years in classrooms built for a person I am never going to become.”

The words were true. Every syllable was verified, cross-referenced, and supported by three years of evidence that Lucian had assembled with the same thoroughness he applied to political intelligence. The argument was airtight.

The argument was also irrelevant, because the issue was never the academy.

Atlas knew it. Lucian knew Atlas knew it. The knowing was mutual and the mutuality was the thing that made this conversation a negotiation rather than an announcement, because Atlas Aelindor did not accept announcements from his sons. He accepted arguments. And arguments required him to be convinced.

“You are dropping out of the institution I selected for you.” Atlas’s voice was even. Measured. Carrying the neutrality of a king whose emotions were present and whose emotions were being managed and whose management was a professional skill he had been honing for years. “An institution that every Fae prince in the recorded history of this realm has completed. An institution I completed. An institution your brother is completing.”

“Tristan’s magic is Fae. His path is Fae. The academy serves his path. It does not serve mine.”

“And what path does yours serve, Lucian?”

“The wolves.”

The word landed in the study. Atlas received it. His face gave nothing, which was different from his face giving nothing about political matters and different from his face giving nothing about River’s protection and different from every other version of nothing Lucian had catalogued across seventeen years of studying the most composed man he had ever known.

This nothing was the nothing of a father hearing a word that rearranged his understanding of his son’s future and finding that the rearrangement removed him from it.

The disappointment was visible.

It crossed Atlas’s face the way weather crosses a mountain, unavoidable and brief and leaving evidence. The evidence was in the tightening around his eyes. In the fractional drop of his shoulders by a degree so small that anyone who hadn’t spent seventeen years memorizing this man’s posture would have missed it entirely.

Lucian didn’t miss it. The not-missing was a knife in his sternum.

“Other Fae have shifted,” Lucian continued, and the continuing was the hardest thing his mouth had ever done because his mouth wanted to stop and apologize and take it back and promise to stay. “Across the continent. They are arriving alone, frightened, rejected by families and kingdoms that see the wolf as a corruption rather than a gift. They have nowhere to go. They have no one who understands what they are.”

“And you believe you are that person.”
