He was getting bigger and heavier, but I could still carry him with both arms. He wrapped his legs around me beneath my coat and rested his head on my shoulder, and I carried him all the way home.

By the time we got back, he was fast asleep. His chest was rattling faintly with each inhale, and when I checked his temperature after getting him dry and warm, he had a fever.

Our regular doctor came within the hour after I called. He checked Bjorn over thoroughly, taking his temperature and his pulse and shining a light in his eyes, and when he was done he stood back and turned to me. I followed him out into the hallway so Bjorn could rest.

“I’ll be honest with you,” he said quietly once we were alone. “I’ve never seen symptoms like this before. This is beyond what I can treat p>

“But I know it’s from angelica,” I pointed out. “Bjorn came to you once before when he was accidentally exposed.” Bjorn had been two at the time. It was before his wolf emerged, so he simply had an allergic reaction to the flower. But this very doctor had treated him.

“Yes, but his symptoms are worse because his wolf emerged too early. I think you need a werewolf doctor. I can manage the fever tonight, but I’m afraid the Demonblood allergy will only get worse over time p>

I stood in the hallway after he left and looked at the closed door of Bjorn’s room for a long time.

Then I went downstairs.

The kitchen was dark. I beelined to the table without turning on the light and snatched the vase off the table.

The angelica flowers were on full display. My mother must have bought a bouquet without realizing what was in it.

I picked up the vase with both hands and walked outside in my socks and dropped the flowers into the outside trash can, vase and all. For a long moment after, I stood there in the cold with my eyes burning and my jaw clenched.

The werewolf doctor arrived the following afternoon. She was a small, brisk werewolf woman who our primary care doctor had recommended. She examined Bjorn for a long time while I sat on the edge of the bed and watched. When she was finished, she asked me to step out into the hallway.

“His wolf is severely weakened,” she said, “and not just from the reaction. This has been building for a while. A young wolf like Bjorn, at this stage of development, needs certain things that the human lands simply can’t provide p>

“What do you mean?” I wrung my hands.

“The flora here is wrong for him. The food is wrong. The air quality, the energy, the community-wolves are pack animals, and his wolf knows it isn’t where it’s supposed to be. “His wolf could die if you don’t get him to the packs,” she cut me off.

My jaw tightened. The doctor left me with a list of supplements and instructions for the next few days, but reiterated just how serious this was. I thanked her and saw her out and then went back to Bjorn’s room.

He was asleep. The fever had come down enough that his face wasn’t flushed
