Avery’s POV
It was the day of the mating ceremony and I had 12 line itinerary with all of the activities I was supposed to oversee or take part in. Several were with Gideon, and as the day progressed, the distance between us only became more evident.
I felt sorrow at the separation. I knew that I was, once again, the cause. It was I who had stopped his intimacy the night before, although my body had been keenly interested and had been thinking about him for hours afterward.
I couldn’t stop remembering the way his face had looked, stricken and upset, when I had pulled away. regretted that I had done so very abruptly. Probably, I could have tried a gentler escape, but what was done was done.
Besides, I didn’t trust myself when I was with him. Every time he kissed me, it was as though my brain flatlined to static. His kiss set my body on fire, while my brain took a back seat. Was this what people were talking about when they described the chemistry with their true mates?
How did anyone get anything done p>
Frustrated, and exasperated with how thoughts of Gideon kept threatening to derail my productivity, I threw myself fully into all the final preparations for the Mating Ceremony and the romp through the woods that would occur immediately afterward.
Which seemed to be working right until I fainted.
I woke up, groggy, on the floor of my office, with Camila standing over me, concerned.
“Avery? Were you sleeping p>
“Uh… Eugh.” I slowly sat up, “I guess I took a nap,” I downplayed it, looking sheepish as though I had merely sat down on the floor to look at some papers and had fallen asleep.
‘You need to eat something,’ my wolf growled in my mind, ‘you are working too hard and your body is using your energy for the pup p>
Ashamed, I took myself down to the kitchen without argument. I felt ashamed that in my desire to avoid awkwardness with Gideon, I had neglected my own body, and therefore my pup.
So I made myself sit at the counter and eat a sandwich and some tomato soup. The cook I had met when I had first arrived had been reassigned to the main pack kitchen, and I was pleased to see her working there today while I ate. She had been kind to me, once, and I still felt fondness for her.
“More soup?” she asked, as she wandered past.
“I couldn’t eat another bite,” I smiled, “Thank you again, Anna p>
“Well, nutrition is important,” she said meaningfully, with a long look, and I blushed. Had she guessed my

secret? I needed to spend less time around knowing old women.
Thankfully Anna understood the importance of discretion, and moved off, leaving me to put my feet up for a moment and sort out my thoughts. 1
I felt sorrow at the idea of leaving. Gideon really had been acting like a changed man since our mating ceremony in the woods, and every second I spent in his company made me regret my choice to take myself and my pup elsewhere. But, for all his talk of showing up, and confronting things as a team, I still wasn’t sure what Gideon felt for me on a personal level. 1
And whatever his feelings might be, a pup changed everything. Especially one that the Rogue King believed was destined to be extremely powerful. I couldn’t stand to think that Gideon’s change in behavior was attributed solely to that, and I didn’t want to find out.
If I left, I would never have to test whether he felt something for me, or just my potential to produce a powerful heir to carry on the Nightwolf line.
I was so deep in my thoughts that I didn’t hear footsteps behind me until hands landed on my shoulders. I screamed, and launched myself into the air, practically falling off my stool.
I whirled to see Gideon looking at me with a quizzical expression. I clutched at my chest, panting,
embarrassed that he was able to sneak up on me, and that I had just been sitting with my feet up when
he did so.
However, he didn’t accuse me of slacking off on this busiest of days.
“Can I join you?” he said, instead, and pulled out the stool next to me when I nodded affirmatively.
For a few long moments, we didn’t talk. Then Gideon broke the ice.
“I used to sit here a lot, as a kid. Anna made me sandwiches back then too p>
