Avery’s POV

The drive to Heathmoore Academy took fifteen minutes instead of twenty because I accidentally blew through a stop sign due to my mind wandering so much.

The school was on the north side of the city, surrounded by manicured lawns and wrought-iron gates. It was expensive, but the education was the best available, and I thought Bjorn would be happy there.

I was wrong.

I had worked so hard to get Bjorn into this school. The tuition was insanely expensive, plus I was expected to be on the PTO despite my lack of time for things like bake sales and fundraisers. But I did it. For Bjorn.

And now, for the third time this month, I was being called in because of another incident.

I parked in the visitor’s lot and walked inside. The receptionist recognized me immediately, and just pointed at the headmaster’s office door without a word. She scowled at me as I passed, so I knew it was really bad.

Sure enough, Bjorn was sitting in a chair near the window in the headmaster’s office. His arms were crossed, and his face was turned away from me. But I could see his knuckles. They were covered in blood.

“Bjorn,” I said.

He didn’t look at me.

The headmaster stood from behind his desk He was a tall and imposing man, but he was kind. Or at least, he used to be before Bjørn started troubling him. Now, every time I saw him, he just looked more and more tired.

“What happened?” I asked by way of greeting.

The headmaster looked at my son, then looked at me, “Bjorn got into a physical altercation with another student during lunch. The other boy had to be taken to the hospital. He has a broken nose, two fractured ribs, and a concussion p>

“Jesus Christ, Bjorn. Is that true p>

I looked at Bjorn. He still wouldn’t meet my eyes, although I could see his jaw clench. Whenever he did that, he looked too much like Gideon, and it made me feel weird.

“Thankfully, the other student will be able to make a full recovery, and the family has decided not to press charges,” the headmaster continued. “But this isn’t the first time Bjorn has acted out violently. And given the extent of the other student’s injuries, we can’t overlook it p>

“What started the fight?” I asked.

“According to witnesses, the other student made a comment about Bjorn’s family. Bjorn responded by attacking him p>

“What did the kid say? Did anyone try to step in p>

“A teacher intervened within seconds. But the damage was already done.” The headmaster sighed. “I’m going to be direct with you. Bjorn can’t continue attending Heathmoore Academy p>

“What?” My mouth hung open. “You’re expelling him p>

“Unfortunately, I have no other choice. This is the third violent incident this month. We’ve tried to work with you. We’ve been patient. But I can’t in good conscience allow a student who poses a physical threat to others to remain enrolled here p>

“He’s ten years old,” I spat. “He’s going through a difficult phase, that’s all, but he’s a good kid! And he’s smart as hell p>

“Good grades can’t fix a pattern of horrible behavior.” The headmaster glared at me. “You’ve told me yourself that his… wolf is… What did you call it p>

“His wolf is emerging early,” I said. Due to Bjorn’s Lycan bloodline and the stress during the pregnancy, his wolf was showing signs years before other pups did. He already had the markers of a hot-headed teenage Alpha despite only being ten. It made him more moody and aggressive, especially toward humans or those outside his “pack”, but it wasn’t his fault.

The headmaster nodded. “Right. Well, it’s not safe for him to be around the other students p>

I clenched my fists. “I’ve been giving him supplements. He’s in therapy twice a week. I’m doing everything I can to help hin manage it p>

“I don’t doubt that. But it’s not enough.” The headmaster stood and walked over to the window. “There are very few werewolves in the human lands. The ones who do live here tend to struggle with assimilation. They form communes. Live on the outskirts. They can’t connect with human ideals the way humans do. Maybe Bjorn needs to be amongst his own kind p>
