That panic felt exactly like the day Davon found out he was illegitimate. He desperately needed to grab onto something before it all slipped away.

Davon smirked, not bothered at all. I’m not trying to trash you guys, but seriously, have you ever beaten us even once? You can’t even put together a proper debate team. How do you think you’ll compete p>
Kayla froze. She’d almost forgotten. They needed four people on the team. She looked around at her Class G classmates, but everyone who caught her eye quickly looked away, clearly terrified of being picked. Obviously, they were all scared of Class A.

Payton stood up with a faint smile. “I wasn’t planning on joining this stupid competition, but with Class A acting so cocky, I’m curious to see what they’ve really got p>
Kayla met Payton’s eyes. They shared a look, then she smiled faintly and nodded. “Alright p>
Davon shot Payton a contemptuous look. “You? You’re just some delinquent who barely shows up to class. Your grades are dead last in the whole school. You think you can actually do this?” he sneered, not bothering to hide his mockery.
Payton didn’t seem bothered at all, his expression calm and unreadable. “Guess we’ll find out soon enough. Why so worried? You getting nervous already p>
Davon’s face twisted with even more contempt. “Nervous? I’m just worried you guys in Class G are gonna embarrass yourselves so bad you’ll regret ever volunteering p>
With someone finally stepping up, Kayla felt way better about their chances. She didn’t need to listen to Davon’s crap anymore. “Win or lose, that’s our problem. We’ll find out when we actually compete,” she shot back.
Kayla swept her gaze across the Class G crowd again. “We still need two more. Who’s in p>

Kayla and Tania exchanged a look and grinned, nodding at each other with that unspoken understanding only
best friends have.
Now they just needed one more person.
But after getting crushed by Class A over and over, nobody in Class G had any confidence left. No one dared to volunteer, and the silence stretched out awkwardly.

When Class A saw this, they started laughing and throwing insults, their faces full of mockery. “Wait, wasn’t Class G acting all tough a minute ago? Now they can’t even put together a team? Guess it was all big talk p>

The chant echoed through the classroom, each shout feeling like a slap across the faces of the Class G students. Every single one of them turned red with humiliation.
Someone from Class G pointed at Marianna. “Hey, isn’t Marianna from our class too? She’s on the debate team. Why isn’t she stepping up p>
When Marianna got called out, she didn’t look embarrassed at all. If anything, she looked a little smug.
Sure, Marianna was on the debate team, the only one from Class G who’d made it. ‘But why should I team up with these losers? If we lose, I’ll just look bad too,‘ she thought. ‘Not like I can say that out loud though p>
Marianna bit her lip and gave Davon her best pleading look, hoping he’d bail her out.
Davon patted her shoulder reassuringly, then glared at the Class G crowd. “You guys were just trash–talking Marianna a minute ago, and now you want her help?
“Dream on. She’s sitting with us, which means she’s on our team. If you really want her, you better apologize to her first. Beg her if you have to p>
That set everyone off. The whole Class G crowd erupted in angry protests.
“Come on, Marianna was the one who framed someone! Who was targeting her? She’s Class G. Why should she get to team up with Class A?” someone snapped.
“Yeah, you guys from Class A are way out of line,” another shot back.
Kayla had zero interest in teaming up with Marianna. ‘People who aren’t part of my crew? They’ve always got their own agenda,‘ she thought. There was no way in hell she and Marianna would ever be allies. She wouldn’t trust Marianna as a teammate if her life depended on it.
But Maria just sat there with that smug look, clearly waiting for someone to beg her to join so she wouldn’t have to say it first. Seeing this, Kayla wanted to rip through her little act right then and there.
“Marianna, who do you actually want on your team?” Kayla asked.
Marianna flinched and shrank back behind Davon, looking spooked. She bit her lip nervously before speaking. “Kayla, you don’t need to threaten me. Even if some people misunderstood me earlier, I’m still part of Class G. Of course I want to work with my own classmates p>
Everyone in Class G relaxed a little, but then Marianna kept going. “It’s just… I’m on the debate team. I actually have experience. You’ve never even been in a debate, right? If you’re on the team, how are we supposed to win no matter how hard we try p>

The message was crystal clear. Marianna was saying she was the only one with real skills. She’d join Class G’s debate team, but not if Kayla was on it. Otherwise, they couldn’t win the debate.
Marianna had debate experience, and Kayla didn’t. Anyone with half a brain knew who to pick. Marianna was drawing a line in the sand–either her or Kayla. There was no having both.
The Class G kids looked uneasy, exchanging nervous glances, clearly torn about what to do.
Kayla saw straight through Marianna’s game. She was trying to get everyone to ice her out. Nice try, Kayla thought, a mocking glint in her eyes. ‘Does she seriously think Class G can’t survive without her?
Just as Kayla was about to say something, Payton cut in and called Marianna out. “Marianna, if you’re scared of losing and don’t want to be on our team, fine. But now you’re trying to get everyone to turn on Kayla too? That’s messed up. What kind of person does that p>
Kayla’s eyes lit up with satisfaction. ‘Finally, someone with the guts to call her out, she thought.
The rest of Class G finally caught on, and they started shooting Marianna angry looks.
“Yeah, Marianna’s totally trying to turn us against each other. Way too sneaky,” someone muttered.
“First, she frames Kayla, now she wants us to freeze her out? Marianna’s seriously twisted,” another added.
“She’s one of us, but instead of acting like a team player, she’s making demands. Zero class loyalty,” someone else said.
With everyone whispering and staring at her, Marianna’s eyes welled up with tears.
“No, that’s not what I meant! I just want us to have a shot at winning. Come on–Kayla doesn’t have any experience…” Marianna protested. Even now, she was still trying to sabotage Kayla whenever she got the chance.
