Chapter 233
MAYA
It’s been three weeks since the contest that had made the queen and her family a pariah in their own land, and me a hero.
Three weeks of floating in the air at the special treatment given to me by the community members, as if I was a princess; a treatment that also stretched to my family.
In school, I received gifts on a daily basis, and requests to be friends, from males and females, even from seniors. But following my parents’ admonition, I’ve been able to remain humble amongst it all, or at least I tried. It wasn’t easy.
Parents, because over the past couple of weeks, I have decided to adopt Laura and Peter as my parents. The first time I had called Laura, mom, and Peter, dad, they had broken down, crying. We had been eating at the dining table.
Diana’s mouth had fallen open in shock at the sudden change in the family dynamics. Since then, we had gotten even more closer, which was quite evident to the surrounding community. But there was one thing missing amidst this all. It was Adam.
It’s been three weeks, and I haven’t seen my new friend. Once I had considered meeting the queen and inquiring if she had banned the Brekans from visiting the community. But I had let it go, because I thought that if Adam really wanted to see me, then he would make a way.
Still, the last three weeks without him had me questioning if I had been stupid letting him kiss me and walk away with it, never mind that it had been on the cheek.
Should I not have accepted his request for friendship? Had I made a fool’s pact?
I jerked when professor Bulock hit his rule on my table. I must have spaced out for the third time.
“Dora Akwoods, if I catch you spacing out again, you will be going to detention.” He threatened, even though there was a light note to it.
That was another welcome change that had come as a result of my win and display at the contest; professor Bulock’s respect.
“I am sorry sir, it won’t happen again p>
I had come to respect him too, especially after his display of impartialness at the contest. And that’s why I took his threat seriously. Three chances were way too good, and luckier than anyone else.
Suddenly remembering the last time I was in detention left a bad aftertaste in my mouth. I didn’t want to relive that nightmare. So, I focused on whatever he was saying.
That was until Rachel and Raul stepped into the classroom, causing a definite halt in the teaching, and in the listening.
“Why are you both late?” Professor Bulock asked the twins, when they sauntered into his class, after muttering a greeting.
This was their first time in class this week, and today was a Friday. But that was to be expected after Rachel was bullied on a Friday, the last two weeks.
I didn’t know who had been behind it, even though the queen and her family thought otherwise.
Stale glue had been poured on Rachel’s seat, and she hadn’t looked before sitting down on it. Her two friends, Chyra and Gina hadn’t told her either.
No. They had abandoned her to her fate, but then they hadn’t been good friends to start with. Sadly, Rachel hadn’t been aware until that day.
It had been unsettling watching Raul try to free his sister from the stronghold of the chair; it had been more unsettling when her short skirt had torn around the buttocks region when he pulled her up with all his strength—turned out that the glue had been infused with magic too.
Fortunately, Raul had worn a jacket. He had immediately removed it and covered his sister’s nakedness.
It had been unsettling watching her run out of the class, crying like a baby would. Even though she was my enemy, I hated bullying.
But I didn’t ask who had been behind it, it wasn’t my concern; yet I had made it known, after Raul had glared at me and left, that I wasn’t for bullying, that I didn’t like it, that I didn’t want someone being bullied for my sake.
It didn’t happen again, maybe because the duo hadn’t been in school since then, until today.
At prof. Bulock’s question, the twins straightened their backs, and then shrugged their shoulders. “We lost track of time p>
Prof. Bulock huffed in anger at the prideful answer and look on their faces. It only seemed that they hadn’t learnt their lessons yet.
“Well then, I hope you lose track of time too in detention today, because you will be in the detention room for four hours after school is over p>
Professor Bulock didn’t stop to see the effect of his punishment on the students as he turned aside and started teaching again. But we, the students, saw the blanching of Rachel’s face.
It made me wonder what nightmare she would be trapped in, what her worst fear was.
I watched as the duo straightened their fallen backs again, and sauntered to their seats without acknowledging the punishment with a ’yes sir p>
Raul walked to Rachel’s seat first and checked if it was free from glue. When he was sure that was the case, he gestured that she sit, before returning to his own seat.
Oh well. Rachel was lucky that she had someone to lean on. When I was in those shoes, I had no one.
I shook my head to free my mind from the cobwebs of my past, especially as the professor started talking again. Get full chapters from.net
Adam was now my friend.
Adam. Would I see him again?
’I think you should listen to the professor before he sends you to detention with them p>
I sighed at El’s words, but obeyed. I didn’t want to be in the same shoes with Raul and Rachel.
The punishment given to them was more than the offense they had committed, courtesy of their pride, but I won’t share it with them. I wasn’t interested.
