Chapter 106

Give anything enough time, and everything is taken care of. This was the exact way Aire felt as she felt the presence of the study room surrounding her.

Her gaze lifted slowly.

It went straight to the shelf, and rested there. For a moment, she simply looked. Her fingers lifted, and they hovered just slightly before settling against the edge of the wood.

Slowly, she began.

She took one document at a time. She moved them carefully, and precisely.

If it was still here, she would find it.

If it wasn’t… Her jaw tightened faintly at that thought. Though she didn’t want that, it would give her the closure she deserves to move on.

Her fingers slid past rolled parchments, sealed envelopes, and stacked records. Each one she checked, then placed aside.

There was nothing there.

Her brows drew together slightly.

Aire shifted.

Her gaze moved lower and then, she saw it. It was no longer where it had been before. This time, it was hidden and pushed behind a set of older ledgers.

Her hand stilled.

Her breath paused and she slowly reached for it.

She pulled it out.

The parchment was aged, but intact. The seal had been broken once, then pressed back poorly.

Her fingers tightened slightly around it. Someone had read it. Of course they had.

Aire didn’t move for a moment.

She simply stared at it. Finally, she carefully opened it. Her eyes moved over the words. Slowly at first, then faster as she read through it.

Her breath shifted.

Her fingers tightened around the edges of the parchment as she read, read, and read.

Silence filled the room.

Her chest rose, a little higher this time.

The words she read through settled down in her chest.

Her eyes settled on her father’s name.

His will was real in her hand. She finally held his will, after all these years. Time has a way of fixing everything.

Her eyes moved to the section that mattered. The part that had been kept from her.

Her inheritance and her future. She read what he had left behind.

Her gaze stilled.

She stopped completely. He never disowned her as Aunt Rosemund had said he had on his dying bed.

The air in the room shifted. The shift was almost imperceptible, but it did.

Her fingers curled slightly into the parchment.

There was a cabin in the mountains left to her specifically. He did not abandon her, or reject her. He provided for her with enough protection to her name and away from wolves who would try to kill her from being wolfless.

Away from everything that’d make her experience how cruel the world was.

Her breath caught. Her throat tightened faintly. She read the lines again, slower this time, trying to confirm if they wouldn’t change.

They didn’t.

He had thought of her. He had planned for her, and made space for her. Yet, her uncle lied to her all these years, and made her a slave.

Aire’s eyes flickered. She turned the page, and her gaze moved further down to the names, the witnesses, and the signatures.

Her heart broke further when she saw the witnesses to the will. Her eyes landed on them.

Rosamund and Beta Kole had both signed as witnesses to the will. They had signed and left their verification on the will.

Her fingers tightened around the parchment, and the parchment crinkled slightly under the pressure.

Her breath slowed. She tried to control what she felt inside her. They had seen it. Her aunt and uncle had known, yet they had hidden it.

They had not misplaced or forgotten the will, yet they acted like it didn’t exist. They had hidden the will from her deliberately.

Aire didn’t move.

For a moment, nothing in her moved. Her grip on the parchment tightened, and the feeling in her chest exploded.

The first paper on the desk shifted then another joined. The air changed, and the quiet in the room grew thicker and heavier.

Aire’s hand lowered slowly, still holding the will.

Her gaze remained on the names, on the signatures, and on the proof.

Her chest rose, then fell.

The papers on the desk rustled and lifted slightly. A harsh wind passed through the desk.

Aire didn’t look up.

Her fingers tightened further. The parchment in her hand trembled faintly.

The papers around her began to rise one by one. They rose with control. At that moment, it felt as if something unseen had reached into the room and decided to move everything at once.

Aire’s jaw tightened. Her eyes darkened. Her eyes glowed, darkening violently.

He had left her something. He had thought of her. He had not abandoned her. And they had taken that from her. They had taken years from her.

They had taken years of her life.

Her choice.

Her chance to leave.

The air around her pulsed. The papers lifted higher now. Some slid from the desk, and others hovered midair.

Her breath came in harshly. Her eyes stilled, focusing on the wall before her, completely blanked out.

Her fingers curled tighter. The will bent slightly under the pressure. Her hand began to tremble violently.

Pressure built in her chest, and her power began to act outwardly. Her body began to convulse the door opened harshly.

The hard sound of the door opening interrupted her blank out. The sound cut through everything.

Beta Kole stepped in.

His eyes landed on her immediately. He stared at the papers floating around the room disorderly.

His steps slowed.

His gaze shifted back to her. “What are you doing?” he yelled, intending to reach her through the growing wind in the room.

His voice wasn’t as strong as before. His voice came out quieter and more cautious now.

Aire didn’t turn. She didn’t look at him, or acknowledge him. The papers stilled gradually. She blinked, and whatever held them had loosened its grip.

They papers fell one by one. They fell softly back to the desk, and to the floor.

The room settled again.

Aire lowered the will. Her fingers relaxed slightly. A glint of anger flashed in her eyes and disappeared as quickly as it came.

She folded it.

She turned towards Beta Kole. He stood there, watching her. He was visibly trying to understand what he had just seen and what she had just done.

Aire walked toward him.

Her steps were steady. When she reached him, she didn’t stop, speak or look at him. She simply walked past him like he wasn’t there.

She closed the door behind her and to Beta Kole, the silence she left behind was heavier than any accusation.

Beta Kole didn’t move.

He didn’t reach for her or speak again. He knew he shouldn’t dare it. Especially not after what she did to him earlier.

Aire stepped out into the corridor. Her eyes watered, and her chest tightened.

Unconsciously, Aire raised her hand, and wrapped it around herself in a self hug. “My father loved me.” she told herself, trying her hardest not to weep.

Beta Rhys straightened when he saw her. His gaze flicked over her face briefly. He knew something happened, but he didn’t ask what happened.

He didn’t need to.

Aire stopped in front of him.

“Take me back to the castle.” She said evenly, still furious.

Rhys didn’t hesitate. He turned immediately and the carriage was brought forward.

Aire stepped in without another word.

She didn’t look back.

The door closed, and the carriage moved.
