Archie quickly regained his composure and whispered, “I’ll go distract her. You head back to your room in a moment. Be careful and make sure no one sees
“Alright.” Johanna nodded.
Archie dressed quickly and opened the door to find Imogen standing there, tears streaming down her face. She looked lost and helpless.
He grew alarmed. “What’s wrong?”
Imogen tearfully recounted Caleb’s fever. She scolded gently, “Archie, why didn’t you check on Caleb? If you were there, maybe he wouldn’t have cried so much.”
“It’s all my fault. I was too tired and slept too deeply,” Archie said soothingly, guiding Imogen out of the hallway. Before stepping out, he glanced back at Johanna, signaling her to leave quickly.
Johanna pouted but obediently dressed and slipped out of the room. She returned to her own room unnoticed,
The crisis was resolved, but Johanna couldn’t shake her Imitation. The thought of Imogen clinging to Archie and crying for comfort was unbearable.
Her gaze darkened as a plan formed. She reigned sleepiness and stepped out of her room , heading toward the noisy nursery. There, she saw Imogen leaning on Archie’s shoulder, silently weeping.
“Imogen, what’s wrong? I think I heard the baby crying earlier. Is everything okay ?” Johanna asked.
Hearing Johanna’s voice, Imogen lifted her head and wiped her tears. “It’s fine, Johanna Did we wake you? Go back to bed. Archie and I are here.”
“I’ll stay with you,” Johanna replied with a sweet smile. “I can’t rest easy knowing the baby’s unwell.”
In the cradle, Caleb had finally been soothed to sleep, but his face was still red from crying.
Johanna leaned over to take a look. As she reached out to touch the baby, a malicious glint flashed in her eyes. She deliberately pressed her nails into Caleb’s skin, leaving a faint scratch
Caleb whimpered, his mouth trembling as if about to cry again, but he was too exhausted to make any sound.
Johanna quickly pulled his clothes over the scratch, hiding the mark. The whole incident happened so quickly that no one noticed.
Two hours later, Caleb’s fever had subsided, and both the maids and the nanny sighed in relief.
However , while changing the baby’s clothes, the nanny froze when she saw the scratch on his chest. The mark was clearly made by a fingernail.
“What… What is this? Where did this come from?” she murmured in shock
Amald gasped but quickly clamped a hand over her mouth, glancing around nervously. Without saying another word, she gestured for the nanny to stay quiet. “Why?” the natury wanted to ask. “From now on, Caleb will sleep with me,” she said while gently rocking the cradle. She added to Archie and Johanna, “You two must be tired. Go get some test. I’ll handle things here.”
Johanna, who was already on the verge of collapsing from exhaustion, yawned and left without hesitation.
Archie stayed a little longer , pouring tea and pretending to be attentive before finally leaving as well.
