Chapter 147
Chapter 147:
Before I could protest, the maids descended upon me, moving swiftly to undress and redress me in the emerald gown. They did this in silence.
“Hey! Stop this!” I struggled against their grip, but they held firm. Their hands felt rough against my skin.
One of the maids, the tallest one with a scar above her left eyebrow, glared at me. “You’ll have to do as the Alpha King says, milady p>
I glared at her but continued wriggling in vain. “How dare he! He thinks he can just dictate my every move p>
If they thought I was being insolent, they kept it to themselves. With the aggressiveness of a thug, I was shoved and pinned to my stool as Seraphina applied my makeup. I didn’t make it easy for her, though; if I didn’t know better, I’d have sworn one of the maids looked like she wanted to scold me for acting like a brat. Jasmine, 1; Seraphina, 0.
I glared at my reflection, the green gown sparkling under the light. Seraphina had outdone herself with the makeup. If I wasn’t so pissed, I might’ve hugged her—but my anger still simmered, no, boiled, beneath the surface.
“Thanks, I needed that,” I muttered, adjusting the delicate straps.
Before I could drink in the beauty of the dress—and my makeup, duh—
Kade burst into the room, an apologetic expression on his face.
“Jasmine, I’m so sorry. I know you’re upset, but p>
I didn’t hear the last part of his sentence or get a chance to respond. In long strides, he was beside me, wrapping his arms around my waist before scooping me up and tossing me over his shoulder like a bundle of wheat.
“Hey! What the hell!” I nudged his spine with my elbows. It had to hurt, but he didn’t even flinch. Undeterred, I continued with a series of kicks and punches as Kade’s pace quickened.
Where the hell was he taking me? First, they’d forced me into a dress and makeup for a ball I’d been informed about at the last minute, and now this… We were outside now.
“Sorry, Jasmine. Ryder’s orders,” Kade shrugged, though there was a hint of amusement in his voice.

Ryder. The nerve of him, making me look ridiculous.
Kade halted in front of a Bentley, opened the door, and gently placed me inside, slamming it immediately as though he thought I’d try to escape.
“Asshole,” I muttered under my breath, smoothing my dress. Damn it! How hadn’t I noticed that cologne till this moment? A warmth crept up my neck as I looked up, realizing Ryder was beside me. Stealing glances at him, I was frustrated to see he looked infuriatingly handsome. His piercing blue eyes met mine for a microsecond before he casually looked away.
His scent was everywhere, and being in such close proximity didn’t help. The effect his cologne had on me… it was just so him, messing with my head and making my thighs feel hot.
Whatever anger I felt toward Ryder dissolved as soon as I caught a whiff of his fragrance. There had to be something really special about him, as my senses heightened at his presence. I became more aware of everything around me. It was like when I sat beside my crush in high school, butterflies in my stomach and all.
I tried to harden my resolve, but it really wasn’t working. It didn’t help that he wasn’t paying me any attention, acting as though he were alone. Maybe that was even why I felt so giddy.
The driver started the engine, and I was grateful for the low hum and the soft music playing from the speaker. It helped fill the obvious gaps of silence that needed to be occupied with sound.
God! This had to be the most awkward drive in the history of drives. Now I wished I were sitting beside the driver—at least I wouldn’t have to purposely keep my face straight; my neck already hurt from the stiffness.
“Turn up the AC, Jerry,” Ryder’s voice cut through the silence. I crossed my legs for what seemed like the tenth time. My current situation felt like a game where the winner was the one who ignored the other person longer. As much as I wanted to look at him, my ego couldn’t bear to suffer another blow.
