A small smile lit his face. He knew what I was thinking.
“Come here, you,” I whispered, pulling him into a hug.
“I love you, Jasmine,” Ryder whispered softly into my ear, his hands tracing the outline of my breasts.

Jasmine’s POV
Home sick, was that even a word? Well, that’s how I felt. Mom had been gone for over a week now, and I missed her like crazy. She was the closest thing that reminded me of home, with her endless gossip that always ended in fits of laughter.
I sighed to myself. At the same time, I was somewhat grateful she wasn’t around. Her pessimistic talks about Ryder only made the hollow feeling in my chest grow.
These days, I devoted myself entirely to my pack duties as Luna, like a mother tending to her newborn. I was slowly beginning to understand how Ryder felt on a daily basis. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t hate my duties—it kept my mind off a lot of my problems for hours. Yet, sometimes I wished I could just have a day to myself and shift my responsibilities to someone else.
But as I’d learned over time, the absence of a lot made you cherish the little things. One of those seemingly small things was the night of passion with Ryder that I looked forward to—the night when Ryder would fill me with his seed, the night when I would be comforted with the knowledge that the heir to the throne was inside me, reinforcing my position as Luna.
We’d both been so busy lately that we barely had the energy for passionate nights like before. The response of my brain to my predicament didn’t make it any better; it reminded me of the pending meeting with the pack elders. Damn, I couldn’t even enjoy the little things that cheered me up. My mood swings kept me edgy and irritated at the slightest inconvenience.
I know I said I didn’t want him to have to choose between losing me or the pack, but I swear to the moon goddess, I couldn’t imagine how I’d live the rest of my days if it came to that point. Ryder was dedicated to his pack; he would become a shadow of himself if he was stripped of his Alpha position, and whatever love we had for each other would slowly turn sour. On the other hand, if he chose his pack, I knew I’d remain broken for the rest of my life.
All these thoughts danced between the borders of sleep and wakefulness. My eyes remained shut, but my body was very much awake.

Ryder was still in bed. I could feel his arms around my waist before I felt one of his good morning kisses on my right cheek—slow and gentle. I stirred, moving closer to his sturdy frame.
“Baby vixen,” he purred, the heat from his lips grazing the top of my ear, sending a warm sensation through my already heated thighs.
“Did you sleep well?” My eyes fluttered open to meet his concerned gaze. I didn’t want to ruin this beautiful morning with an insight into my intrusive thoughts. I mumbled something incoherent and placed my hands on his chest.
“You didn’t wake up now. I’ve been staring at you for a while,” he whispered close to my lips.
As much as his whispering turned me on and I wanted to kiss those lips that suddenly couldn’t speak aloud, I was also torn between opening up about my fears or shoving them aside. The latter wasn’t as appealing as the first, because only the moon goddess knew how many sleepless nights I’d endured over the last two weeks.
“You’re right, I wasn’t asleep. Actually, I was…” An intense pressure from the middle of my stomach accompanied by a sour taste in my throat sent my hands to my mouth. I rushed to the bathroom, bent my head over the toilet, and with labored groans, I puked.
Afterward, my breaths evened out, and I felt a hand—Ryder’s—close to my neck, making soothing circular movements, his other hand on my stomach, supporting me.
“Are you better now? You need to see a doctor,” he said, his words more of an order than a suggestion.
