A Heartache and a Distraction.
He grinned wider. “Then I guess I’ll just have to make a better second one p>
The nerve of him. The audacity. And yet, part of me, a traitorous part, didn’t tell him to leave. Maybe it was because he was new. Maybe it was because the sound of his laugh was a distraction from the echo of Elliot’s voice still clinging to my skin. Dean made himself right at home, because of course he did. He plopped down on my bed like he owned the place, one leg hanging off the side, his fingers already fiddling with the trinkets on my nightstand –rings, hair ties, the little crystal Felix had given me last winter.
“Careful,” I said, snatching it from him. “That one’s cursed.
He raised a brow, lips curving. “Really p>
“No,” I deadpanned, “but it could be if you don’t put it down p>
He laughed, stretching out until he was lying flat, hands tucked behind his head, looking way too comfortable. “You know,” he said lazily, “you don’t make it
easy to be bored p>
“I’m not trying to entertain you p>
He grinned up at the ceiling. “Good thing I’m easily entertained, then p>
I groaned, turning to face him. “Did you come here for a reason, or just to rearrange my personal space p>
“Actually,” he said, sitting up, “I came to see if you wanted to grab something to eat. I saw a burger place on the way into town, little place, neon lights, smells like heaven. Thought maybe you could show me if it’s any good p>
I blinked, surprised. “You want to go out? With me p>
“Well, yeah.” His smile tilted, easy and unbothered. “Unless you’re too busy doing… whatever it is you do when you’re not being terrifyingly mysterious p>
I should’ve said no. I wanted to say no. But the words that came out instead were, “Give me two minutes p>
I don’t know why I agreed. Maybe it was because I was tired of thinking. Maybe I just needed something or someone to distract me from the ache that
wouldn’t leave.
Dean’s grin widened, victorious. “I’ll take that as a yes p>
I grabbed my jacket, slipped it over my sundress, and met him by the door. The walk down into town was quiet at first, the evening it cool against my skin The streets were half-lit, the sky bruised purple and gold, and the faint hum of pack life carried through the wind, laughter, and howis. My home
Dean shoved his hands into his pockets, falling into step beside, ine. “So,” he said casually, “what do people do for fun around here, besides hike racing and
pack politics p>
“Mostly that,” I admitted. “And arguing about who’s stronger p>
He chuckled. “You, obviously p>
“Obviously,” I agree, deadpan, and he laughed again.
We posed the nld library, the training fields, and the bakery that always smelled like sugar and cinnamon. I didn’t realise how nice it felt hat to walk t
w think about magk or responsibility or the millian things waiting at home ity the time the call came into vise a tiny times with thickering lights and a hatid-painted Open sign, i caught myself smiling.

Dean noticed, of course. “There it is,” he said softly. “Knew I’d get one out of you eventually p>
I rolled my eyes, but it didn’t hide the warmth creeping up my neck. “Don’t get used to it p>
He grinned, pushing the door open and motioning me inside. “Too late p>
“I just like food, okay?” I said, trying my best to give a stern look over my shoulder, but it only made him laugh.
“Okay, so the way to your heart is through your stomach, got it. He said and winked as we sat down at one of the empty booths.
