Chapter 232
Track Her.
I scrambled backward on the gravel, my palms stinging as they dug into tiny stones and sticks, my
heart slamming so hard it hurt. Dean’s shadow stretched long across the dirt as he stalked toward
me, eyes burning with something ugly and unrecognisable. The smirk was gone, replaced by rage,
pure, seething rage.
“You should be grateful,” he snarled. “Do you have any idea how many girls would kill to be in your
place? I thought you were playing hard to get, but you’re just a damn prude.”
“Stop,” I whispered, but my voice was too small, the word swallowed by the night.
He grabbed a fistful of my hair, jerking my head back until my eyes watered. His breath was hot and
soured with anger. “You know your friend Tessa? She wasn’t such a prude. She was easy. I barely had
to try, and she was in my bed.” His smile twisted, cruel. “But she wasn’t the one I wanted.”
My stomach turned to ice.
“I came here for you, Macey. And you don’t even know who you are.”
Then he laughed, a harsh, joyless sound, and before I could move, the world exploded in white light. Pain shot through my head, my vision fracturing. The last thing I heard was his voice, distant and
warped. And then everything went dark.
Envy
Dinner was done, the dishes stacked neatly in the sink, my mates had finally stopped working for the day, and we were all getting ready to settle in for the night. Upstairs, the quads had stopped bickering, their laughter replaced by the occasional creak of a bedframe and soft murmurs drifting through the floorboards. It was domestic and calm, two things I’d learned never to take for granted. I leaned back in my chair, curling my fingers around the stem of my wine glass, and glanced toward
Haiden. “What time was Macey meant to be home again?”
He checked the clock on the wall, squinting slightly. “She said she was going out for dinner with a

friend, right? Shouldn’t be too late.”
Xavier arched an eyebrow, the faintest smirk tugging at his lips. “Did you happen to ask which
friend?”
Haiden groaned, tossing his napkin onto the table. “She’s practically an adult, Xavier. Come on. We
can’t hover over her forever.”
Noah chuckled, but there was a note of warning under it. “Should we really be giving her that much
space, considering she was just grounded for skipping class and running off into the woods with a
boy she barely knows?”
At that, Levi’s head lifted from where he’d been lazily tracing circles along the rim of his glass. “You
don’t think she actually went to dinner with him, do you?”
I laughed, the sound a little too quick, too light. “Of course not. She’s a good kid…” I caught myself,
shaking my head with a small smile. “A good young woman. She’s not going to make the same
mistake twice.”
Haiden grinned. “See? Even her mother has faith.”
“Her mother doesn’t have the best track record for following rules,” Xavier murmured, earning
himself a playful kick under the table.
“Times were different back then,” I said, sipping my wine. “And besides, Macey’s smarter than I was.
Noah raised an eyebrow. “That’s debatable.”
Levi chuckled, the kind of soft rumble that warmed the room. “She’s got your stubborn streak, love.
That’s not always a good combination with a pretty boy and a fast car.”
I waved him off, though the smile that had been tugging at my lips faltered just slightly. “She’s fine.
She’s got sense. And Elliot’s always keeping an eye on her, even if she doesn’t realise it.”
At that, the table went quiet for a moment, each of us, I think, lost in our own version of that truth,
Track Her.
Elliot did watch out for her. Too much sometimes. It was a kind of protectiveness that went beyond brotherly instinct, and though I’d tried not to look too closely at it, I couldn’t deny the tension that sometimes sparked between them. We all knew he didn’t see her that way; he never had. He’s always loved her in a different light.
Haiden stretched, chair creaking under his weight. “Well, if she’s not home in the next half hour, I’ll go check in. Maybe she stopped to talk with Tessa or something.”
Xavier nodded absently, fingers drumming on the table. “Let’s hope that’s all it is.”
I called Macey’s phone, hoping to see where she was and when she was coming home, but there was no answer. That wasn’t unusual for her though, so I waited.
Half an hour bled into forty minutes. Then fifty. The light outside dimmed to a deep indigo and I sat waiting to hear the front doors open.
Haiden checked the time again, his expression tightening. “Alright,” he said finally, pushing back from the table. “I’ll call Tessa’s parents, see if they’ve heard from her. Maybe Mace stayed out longer
than she meant to.”
Xavier leaned back in his chair, watching him go, while I tried to tell myself this was nothing. She
was fine. She was smart. She was…..
My hands clenched around the edge of the table. “Xavier,” I said softly, “call Elliot. See if he knows
where she’s gone.”
He frowned but nodded, already pulling his phone from his pocket.
I took a slow breath, forcing my voice to stay calm, reasonable. “I’m sure she’s fine,” I said aloud,
mostly for myself. “She’s nearly eighteen. We don’t need to panic. I just…” My throat tightened. “I
just want to make sure she’s not out doing something silly or dangerous.”
Levi reached across the table, brushing his thumb across the back of my hand. “She’s responsible,
love. She’s not a kid anymore.”

“Exactly,” I murmured. “And that’s what scares me.”
Haiden reappeared, phone pressed to his ear. His expression was pinched, his brows drawn together.
“What did they say?” I asked.
He sighed, setting the phone down. “Tessa’s parents spoke to her. Apparently, Macey told Tessa she
was going out with some new girls from school.”
My stomach turned cold. “New girls?”
“Yeah.” He rubbed the back of his neck, uneasy. “Said they wanted to grab dinner in town.”
“That doesn’t sound like her,” I said, the words barely above a whisper.
Xavier lowered his phone, shaking his head. “Elliot’s not answering.”
I furrowed my brows and stood quickly. “Okay. This is fine, not a big deal. Totally fine.” I took a deep
breath. “Okay, Xaiver, go track down Elliot. The rest of you, noses in the air, we’re tracking Macey.”
My men stood, nodding. They knew well enough by now not to argue. Even if she were fine, I’d put
my eyes on her first to confirm it.
