Chapter 250 Chosen, Not Claimed
The pain hits like lightning. Every bone in my body shatters at once – a white–hot crack that ricochets through my skull, down my spine, into every trembling limb. My scream echoes off the stone walls, animal and raw, as my vision fractures. The air burns against my skin, blistering and cold all at once, the scent of
blood and ozone thick in my lungs.
I can’t breathe.
Can’t think.
Can’t be.
The power inside me isn’t something I can hold anymore. It’s ripping me apart, clawing its way out like it’s alive. My ribs splinter, my fingers bend backward, my skin splits down my arms in lines of silver light that spill out like liquid moonfire. I fall forward, catching myself on my hands. The bones twist, pop, reform. My screams turn to snarls. My teeth lengthen, sharp and foreign against my tongue. The agony is endless and exquisite, every nerve on fire, every heartbeat another explosion under my skin.
Then there’s silence. For one eternal moment, the world holds still. The breath of the cave stops. The air itself seems to bow. And then the light erupts. It’s not just light, it’s creation itself. A blinding, endless white that devours every shadow, every drop of blood, every ounce of darkness until there’s nothing left but brilliance. The blast tears through the cavern, throwing everyone off their feet. I hear stone split, screams cut short, and metal hit the floor.
And then… stillness.
–
When I blink open my eyes, the light fades, and the first thing I see isn’t skin. It’s fur. Soft, shimmering white fur that glows faintly even in the aftermath of the light. My breath comes out as a soft, shaky huff. I
large, powerful, trembling with the remnants of pain and power – stand lower my gaze. Four paws planted on the shattered stone. The silver veins of the cave reflect in my white coat like the moon on rippled water.
Hello, my little goddess–blessed.
The voice inside my head is gentle and melodic, like laughter caught in a breeze.0000000
I freeze. What the fuck?
A soft giggle echoes through my mind. We’ll talk about it later.
I lift my head slowly. The air tastes different now, it’s alive and electric. I can smell everything: blood, sweat, fear, magic, and something else beneath it all… Everyone in the cavern has gone still. The fight is gone, silence replacing chaos. Even the torches seem to burn lower. And then Dean moves. He stumbles to his feet, blood dripping from his arm, eyes wide and shining gold. He looks at me like he’s seeing divinity
itself, like every monster in him is suddenly worshipping at my feet.
His hands spread wide, palms up in false surrender. “Mate,” he breathes. The word is soft, reverent,
poisoned.
Inside me, the wolf’s voice sharpens. Mate… she says, the word rolling off her tongue like a test. Then she
pauses. He’s not worthy of us.
Yeah, I agree, low and certain, my growl vibrating through the ground. I agree.
Dean steps closer, his lips curving in a trembling smile. “You’re magnificent,” he says, his tone dripping devotion and madness. “I knew you’d be mine. The Gods made you to be mine.”
He drops to his knees in front of me, his gaze locked on mine, hungry and desperate. “Come, my love. Let
me-”
I move before he finishes the sentence. One step. Two. The sound of my claws clicking against the stone is the only warning he gets. Then my jaws open wide, and I lunge. My teeth sink into his throat with a wet, satisfying crunch. His hands slap weakly at my fur as I rip through muscle and windpipe, as blood fills the air in a crimson spray. His gurgled scream dies halfway through, his body twitching once before falling limp.
The wolf in my head hums in satisfaction. Good girl.
I drop his body, the taste of iron coating my tongue. His golden eyes dim as they stare up at me, empty, lifeless, finally silent.
The chamber stays quiet – stunned, reverent quiet. Then, slowly, I turn. Elliot is still on his knees, his scythe forgotten beside him. His mouth is half open, eyes wide and wet with something between awe and heartbreak. He looks at me like I’ve become something he prayed for and feared all at once. I take a
cautious step toward him, my paws silent on the blood–slick stone. He doesn’t move, barely breathes. 1 lower my head, inching closer until I can feel the faint hum of his magic against my muzzle. For a heartbeat, neither of us moves. Then, slowly, he raises his hand. His fingertips tremble as they brush against my fur, tentative and reverent. His palm settles on my head, warm and shaking.
“Oh, Macey,” he whispers, voice breaking. “You are so beautiful.”
A low rumble of affection escapes me, something deep and ancient. I nuzzle into his touch, pressing my head against his chest until he falls back onto his butt with a startled laugh. I don’t stop – I shove my muzzle against him, into his neck, his chest, his lap, covering him in fur and warmth and blood until he’s laughing and crying all at once. His arms come up around me, holding me like he’s afraid I’ll vanish. I close my eyes. For the first time in forever, I feel whole. Then the light comes again, but softer this time, wrapping around us both like a blessing. I can feel it, the pull of something ancient, divine, settling between us. A bond snapping into place with the quiet finality of destiny rewritten. I shift back without thinking. The transition this time is gentle – bones reshaping, fur melting into skin, the light fading until I’m just…. me again. Naked, blood–streaked, shaking, but more alive than I’ve ever been. Elliot doesn’t look away. His hand finds mine, steady and grounding. I can feel it that snap, that hum between us. The mate bond. My
second chance.
I swallow hard, blinking up at him. “Mate,” I whisper. My voice trembles, but the word feels right. Sacred.
His breath catches. “Macey…”
“My mate,” I say again, softer this time, and the light flares once more, a shimmer of silver across our joined hands. And then I lean forward, closing the last inch of space between us. Our lips meet, not desperate, not wild, but tender, like the universe has finally stopped running from itself. The taste of blood and starlight fills my mouth. His hand slides to the back of my neck, holding me close.
The wolf in me purrs softly. Now this is someone who will love us properly.
I smile against his lips. Yeah, I whisper back. He will.
