Chapter 267 The Awakening of the Veil
Elliot
The first thing I notice is the silence. Not the kind that comes from still air or empty space, the kind that fills you after years of noise. For the first time in longer than I can remember, the Veil’s hum isn’t inside my head. The constant pull, that low, endless vibration that’s been part of me since the day Envy and I remade the realms, it’s gone. I lie there in the dewy grass, Macey’s hand resting over my heart, and I just… breathe. It feels wrong at first, almost frightening, to not feel that tether thrumming beneath my ribs. For so long, the Veil has been a part of me, like a second pulse, a leash, a prison. But now there’s only the steady rhythm of my own heartbeat. And hers The runes beneath us glow faintly, golden–white against the soil, pulsing in time with the shared rhythm. Threads of light spiral upward from the earth like smoke, curling around our bodies, tangling through the air. The whole clearing hums, alive and electric, but softer now no longer holding us… Just thanking us. Macey shifts beside me, her cheek brushing my shoulder. And then I feel a pull, deep and ancient, rising through the ground like a wave. A shimmer rolls across the field, the grass bowing in a slow, graceful ripple. New symbols flicker to life beneath the soil, spirals of light and shadow intertwining. It’s the same hum that used to live inside my bones, but this time it’s not pulling at me… It’s letting go. The energy rises higher, spreading outward like breath exhaled for the first time in millennia. My vision blurs, the edges of the world glowing. I can feel my soul, the piece that’s been trapped, anchored to this plane for so long…loosening.
“Elliot,” Macey whispers, her fingers tightening around mine.
I can’t even speak. I just watch as light ripples through the clearing, dancing over her skin, through her hair, in her eyes. She’s radiant. She’s the one doing this. She lifts her free hand, and the power beneath us surges in response. The golden spirals at our feet flare brighter, the ground shaking just slightly before a soft sound fills the air, a deep, resonant tone that vibrates through my bones. The invisible thread that has been wrapped around my soul for years trembles once and breaks. The moment it does, my entire body floods with warmth. The weight I didn’t even realise I was still carrying just… falls away. I gasp, the air tearing out of me like I’m breathing for
the first time.
The magic around us shifts, no longer gold, no longer shadow, but something between. It folds back into the ground like it’s finally at peace. I fall back into the grass, my chest heaving. Every breath feels clean. The world smells sharper, sounds clearer. For the first time in what feels like forever, I can hear my heartbeat without the echo of a thousand others behind it.
Macey rolls onto her side to face me, her expression soft and knowing. “It’s done,” she whispers.
My throat burns, and I nod because I can’t trust my voice yet. “It is.”
She reaches out, brushing her thumb across my cheek. “You’re free, Elliot.”
I swallow hard, the words hitting deeper than I expect. “You freed me,” I say, but it comes out rough, almost broken.
Macey shakes her head gently. “No,” she murmurs “We freed each other”
The clearing glows one last time before the magic begins to settle in the air above us, faint shapes shimmer in silhouettes of light. They ripple like water in the night sky, bending toward the moon as it called home. For a moment, the whole clearing glows and then the light begins to move. It drifts downward, slow and deliberate, threads of silver sliding through the darkness until it finds her. The moonlight gathers around Macey, curling through her hair, along her shoulders, until it crowns her in a halo of living radiance. The glow builds, swimming through the air in graceful arcs before weaving itself into a form, a circlet of pure moonlight that rests gently on her head. It
isn’t just light, it’s alive, moving and breathing with her pulse, each strand whispering of balance and creation She looks holy Not untouchable but radiant and real. The crown suits her It’s everything she is warmth, strength, and mercy, all wrapped in celestial fire. and when the light settles, I see the contrast that steals my breath. Below that divine glow, right over her heart, my mark burns black and vivid against her skin- an inky shadow shaped like the heart that once belonged to me. The one I always intended to give to her it pulses faintly, a mirror to my own heartbeat. Shadow and light. Darkness and flame. The echo of me marked into her chest, and the gift of the gods resting on her brow. She glances down at herself, one hand brushing over the mark that binds us, and then she looks up at me. the light from her crown spilling over her face. Her lips part softly, a smile tugging there. I can’t speak. I can only stare at the writin who now carries both my darkness and her own light.
The Veil hums around us, content, steady, balanced at last and as the air settles into quiet again, I finally understand this was never about one of us holding the other up. It was always about finding a middle ground. The Queen of Light. The King of Shadow. Bound together, not by duty, but by love strong enough to steady the realms themselves. I move on instinct, scrambling to my knees, and looking at her just one more time, before I lower my head to her. “My Queen, I whisper. Macey giggles, soft and playful, before she drops to her own knees in front of me. Her hands lift my chin until our foreheads rest together, and she whispers back, “My King.
Once all of the magic from the moment has worn off, I help Macey with her clothes, and then with my own. We’ve stayed together for what feels like hours now. If I’m being honest, I haven’t been counting the time; I’ve simply been basking in every second I get with her. We reluctantly decide to return to the party, even though all I want is to have her curled up beside me longer. Macey’s fingers tighten around mine as the portal closes behind us, her crown dimming into a faint shimmer of moonlight in her hair. The night air brushes over us, cool and clean, and the moon above seems almost softer now, as if it’s watching us with pride.
The sound of laughter and voices reaches us before I see anyone. The bonfire we left still burns, lower now, just a smouldering core. The pack has gathered close again. Envy, her mates, the quads, and half the damned family tree are all lounging around, enjoying the evening. When they see us, the entire group comes to a standstill, not out of fear I don’t think, it’s something more like reverence. Noah’s the first to move. He steps forward slowly, eyes flicking over Macey, then me. “You did it,” he breathes.
It’s not a question. Envy’s standing just behind him, her hair moving in the faint wind, her eyes brighter than I’ve ever seen. She takes one look at us and gasps, then her hand flies to her chest, a soft, broken laugh escaping her lips.
“I can’t feel it,” she whispers. “Elliot… it’s gone.”
I nod, swallowing hard. “The tie’s been broken. The Veil stands on its own now.”
She laughs again, it’s a sound I’ve rarely heard from her, half–sob, half–relief, and before I can brace myself, she’s moving. Envy crosses the distance and pulls us both into her arms, her warmth, her scent, that impossible mix of blood and starlight wrapping around me like home. “My beautiful girl,” she says to Macey, kissing her temple. “And my boy. My brave, reckless boy.” Her voice breaks on the last word. I feel it then, the full weight of what she’s saying. She can breathe again. She can live again. The pain that’s haunted her since she tied
her soul to the Veil is gone.
Behind her, the others step closer. Xavier’s eyes glimmer faintly, Levi’s hand on his shoulder, Haiden hovering protectively beside Noah. Each one of them looks… lighter. As if the entire pack has been holding its breath all this time and only now, finally, exhaled.
Envy pulls back, her hands still on our shoulders. “You freed us,” she says softly, her gaze flicking between us.
Macey shakes her head, voice trembling. “We didn’t free you. We just… finished what you started.”
Envy smiles, that same soft, proud smile she used to give Macey when she was little. “That’s what all parents hope for, isn’t it? That their children finish the story better than they began it.”
Haiden, ever the stoic, clears his throat. “Alright, enough with the waterworks. Somebody tell me this means I can finally age again because, frankly, being this handsome forever has been exhausting.”
Noah snorts. “You’re delusional if you think time’s going to make that better.”
Their laughter cracks the tension, and I can’t help but laugh too. For the first time in too long, it sounds real. Lyra and the boys tumble forward from behind the adults, the quads, all awkward limbs and boundless curiosity. Lyra gasps when she sees Macey’s crown still flickering above her head.
“You’re glowing,” she whispers in awe.
Macey blushes, ducking her head a little. “Yeah… I guess I am.”
Levi steps closer, reaching out as if to sense it. “The energy around you both is different. Balanced.”
Xavier folds his arms, looking me up and down. “Well, look at that. The brooding soul–eater finally found his sunshine.”
Macey giggles, and I smirk back. “Jealousy doesn’t suit you,
brother.”
“Neither does happiness,” he mutters, grinning despite himself.
It’s chaos after that – hugs, questions, jokes. But beneath all the noise is a single truth that hangs in the air like a heartbeat. The Veil still stands. The realms are safe. And for the first time since this all began, no one here is bound to it. Envy takes a step back, finally wiping her cheeks, her voice soft but clear. “The Underworld has its rulers again,” she says, looking between Macey and me. “And this world still has its protectors. We can rest now.”
Her mates move to her side, wrapping her close. It’s a picture I never thought I’d see, pure peace on their faces, warmth in their laughter. For so long, they’ve been soldiers, guardians, keepers of a cursed balance. Now they just look… human. Happy.
Macey squeezes my hand, and when I glance down at her, my chest tightens. She’s glowing, literally. The bonfire’s light paints her in gold, the moon catches in her hair, and the inky swirl of my mark darkens on her chest, curling like smoke over her skin. She’s a vision of everything good I ever dared to believe in. Love and light, made flesh. I can’t help myself, I pull her into my arms and kiss her, right there in front of everyone. The world roars in approval, the air crackling with cheers and whistles and laughter. I don’t care. I’m proud. Gods, I’m proud. Like a peacock showing off every feather, shouting to the realms, This is my mate. My miracle. Look what she can do. Macey laughs against my lips, radiant and alive, and the sound sends something warm and fierce through me. When I finally tear my gaze away from her, Envy’s standing a few steps away, tears glinting in her eyes. She crosses the distance without hesitation, pulling Macey into her
arms.
“You did it, my girl,” she whispers, her voice rough with pride. “You’re the bridge now, the balance I could never be.”
Macey clings to her, trembling, crying, and laughing all at once. Watching them hurts in a way I can’t explain. Envy’s never been one for soft moments, but this… this is different. I turn away for a second, because even after everything, seeing Envy cry still guts me.
When Macey finally pulls back, Envy’s smiling through her tears. “Congratulations on your bonding, sweetheart,” she says, brushing her thumb over Macey’s cheek. “You’ve done what even the gods couldn’t: you’ve balanced what was broken.”
Noah grins from behind her. “And for once, no one had to die doing it.”
Levi elbows him with a laugh. “Don’t jinx it.”
Envy rolls her eyes, but her smile only widens. “We’ll hold a ceremony soon, something proper. But for tonight…” She glances between Macey and me, her expression softening. “Just enjoy it. You’ve earned your peace.”
Macey leans into me, her hand finding mine again. I can feel her heartbeat through her palm, strong and steady. Peace. It’s such a simple
word, but standing here, surrounded by the family we fought for, I realise it’s the rarest kind of magic there is. And tonight, it finally
belongs to us.
