Chapter 10
Labor Day was approaching, and the company tasked me with sourcing ten thousand chocolate gift boxes.
Out of pure kindness, I decided to throw some business my old classmate’s way.
But then she actually turned around and posted this on Instagram:
[What do I do, girls?! My old classmate–who was literally a nobody back in school–somehow clawed her way up to become a procurement manager at a publicly traded company! Sure, I’m making bank off this deal, but I’m SO pressed about it. How do I drag her back down? ]
The comments were dragging her through the mud, but then someone dropped this brilliant idea:
[Easy. Give her a fat kickback, then report her ass! She’ll get fired, you’ll get your money back, and if you give her enough, she might even do some real
time p>
The next second, my old classmate slid into my DMs:
[Babe, thanks for looking out for my little business! How about I kick back 20% to you p>
I smirked and hit her back:
[That’s lowkey insulting. How about 30 %? ]
When I found out my high school classmate Gemma Knox had snagged the distribution rights for some boutique artisanal chocolates from this fancy Vermont chocolatier, I knew I had to hit her up.
Ten thousand Valrhona truffle gift boxes for our Labor Day employee perks? Perfect.
She was all tears of gratitude to my face.
But behind my back, she was putting me on blast on Instagram:
[What do I do, girls?! My old classmate–who was literally a nobody back in school–somehow clawed her way up to become a procurement manager a
a publicly traded company! Sure, I’m making bank off this deal, but I’m SO pressed about it. How do I drag her back down p>
The comments section was absolutely destroying her.
But she was like a lit firecracker, going off in the replies, clapping back at everyone:
[Y’all don’t know SHIT! Back in school, she couldn’t touch me in any category! Mid looks, mid grades, dressed like she shopped at Goodwill clearance. Total invisible loser vibes p>
[Meanwhile, me and my husband are barely scraping by with our little side hustle, can barely make our mortgage, while Miss Nobody is living her best life as some hotshot procurement manager! Rolling up in a Benz, carrying LV bags–her table scraps could feed my whole family! Who wouldn’t be pressed p>
[She could’ve bought chocolates from literally ANYONE, but she had to come to me? Just flexing on purpose! Finally gets to show up the former prom queen, bet she’s absolutely LIVING for it p>
( I’m so done, SO DONE! Wish she’d just get fired tomorrow p>
The post was so unhinged it started going viral:
[Girl needs therapy ASAP. Imagine being mad at someone for throwing business your way? You’re gonna stay broke forever with that attitude p>
[ Now I get why broke people stay broke–someone hands you a ten–thousand–unit deal and you’re out here praying for their downfall? Who’s gonna trust you with business after this p>
Chapter 1
Gemma was in those replies like her life depended on it:
[Quit acting all high and mighty! Y’all would be just as pressed if you were in my shoes p>
I heard she got into that company straight out of college through connections! But she went to the safety school I didn’t even bother applying to! If I’d wanted that spot, it would’ve been mine! She basically got my leftovers p>
Besides, we’re old classmates–isn’t it natural she’d throw me some business? I could tell she was DYING to get these chocolates, and I’m the exclusive listributor here. She had to come begging to me! If anything, I’m the one doing HER the favor p>
UGH! Just thinking about how my connections are basically doing her a favour makes me even more mad! ]
