Henry’s good mood from teasing Aubrey didn’t last. The thought that she had nearly died gnawed at him, relentless. He couldn’t endure it for a single day.
He summoned Cam and ordered him to investigate the attack.
Before leaving, Cam hesitated. “Alpha, are you truly planning to go to the Moon Goddess’s place of origin? I’ve looked into it. Even with the best preparations, few who enter ever return.”
Henry’s response was steady. “I must go.”
The Kajit virus in his body was nearly purged now, only lingering side effects of the serum troubling him. If not for the mystery of who had tried to harm Aubrey, he would already be on his way to beg the Moon Goddess herself to sever the sibling contract between them.
Then he could pursue her openly, let every wolf in Shadowmoon Pack–and across the continent–know that Aubrey was his and his alone.
“But Alpha,” Cam pressed, “if you truly go to the Moon Goddess’s origin, who will lead the pack in your absence? And I’ve heard rumors: in the southern Forest of Tears, there’s a witch who brews potions capable of severing the Moon Goddess’s bond from one side. Perhaps we could send someone to buy it.”
Henry paused, then gave a short nod. “Send Barry. He’s best at trade.”
“Yes, Alpha.” Cam exhaled quietly in relief. If Barry succeeded, Henry wouldn’t need to risk his life.
Still, Henry wasn’t optimistic. After a moment’s thought, he added, “Tell John to spend three hours every day with me from now on. He needs to learn.” ɪꜰ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴏʀᴇ ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀs, ᴘʟᴇᴀsᴇ ᴠɪsɪᴛ
“Yes, Alpha.” Cam blinked, then understood and agreed.
He left to relay the orders.
First, he found Barry.
Barry’s expression twisted. “…Fuck. In the end, it still has to be me?”
He groaned inwardly but said aloud, “Fine. I’ll pack and leave immediately.” A trip to the Forest of Tears also gave him the chance to check on Perry, that idiot. He wondered if Perry had ever found his precious omega.

“Good.” Cam nodded, then moved on to find John.

But John shook his head frantically when he heard. “Tell Alpha I can’t. I need all my time here. The low–side–effect serum is almost ready. I have to see it through!”
Cam, the pack’s most composed beta, stood frozen. “…”
He drew a deep breath, forcing a calm smile. “This is the Alpha’s command.”
“Alpha will understand me.” John bolted into the lab, clutching vials and scribbling formulas, ignoring everything else.
The truth was, he was panicking.
He regretted giving Aubrey that potion. But he’d confirmed with Justin–there was no antidote. Aubrey would love him for life.
Gods, if Henry ever discovered that Aubrey’s heart had shifted… would he kill him?
Meanwhile, Aubrey received a call from Charles.
“Candy’s acting strange,” he explained, naming his long–haired orange cat. “But I have a mission, three to five days. Could you watch her for me?”
“Of course,” Aubrey agreed readily. It was an excuse to get out. Staying at the Miguel estate meant constant run–ins with Henry–and lately, he’d turned suffocatingly overbearing, kissing her without warning.
Better to stay with Charles for now. She also had some matters to handle privately.
“I’m outside the Miguel estate now,” Charles added quickly when she accepted.
Aubrey blinked but said, “Alright, I’ll come right out.”
She packed lightly and slipped out.
On the way, she ran into Barry. He looked as though he wanted to speak, probably to warn her not to leave. She waved him off and hurried past before he could stop her.
Henry, busy in council with the elders, never knew.
Aubrey made it out smoothly and climbed into Charles’s car.
“Drive,” she urged at once. “Quickly–before someone drags me back.”
