That hit jolted some sense back into me. I shifted back into human form mid–air and landed on my feet. Right now, Changsheng was all that mattered. Even if he had just one breath left…

“Calm down! Didn’t you say you trusted me? I’m not letting you touch him!”

Despite Mateo’s threat, alpha Henry didn’t hesitate to defend me. I felt both touched and relieved.

Good thing he came with me today. Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t have made it through. I’d used up all my energy treating Leon, and Ella had gone completely silent. Right now, I was at my weakest.
I reached out and took alpha Henry’s hand, speaking softly. “It’s okay. Trust me–I can handle this. It was the first time I’d spoken to him gently in days.
