Matthew glanced back at Sebastian. “Come on. I’ll drive you home.”
Reese didn’t even look at Sebastian. She just nodded and let Matthew lead her out of the interrogation room.
At the Ratcliff family’s old mansion, Jane stood frozen, staring at the credentials in front of her.
“Mrs. Ratcliff, I’ve already explained the situation. Please come with us,” said the National Security Bureau officer as he put away his badge and gestured toward the door.
Jane’s face went pale. “How could I possibly steal state secrets?” She stumbled back, panic rising in her eyes. She never expected that the little black box Leslie told her to slip into Reese’s pocket was actually a transmitter. She never thought that doing Leslie this tiny favor would drag her into such a mess.
She shot a glare at the butler and barked, “What are you standing around for? Get them out of here! I am not going to the National Security Bureau!”
Then, turning back to the officers, she demanded, “And what proof do you have that I put that thing in Reese’s pocket? For all you know, Reese is just trying to set me up to save herself! Everyone knows she’s my daughter-in-law, and everyone knows we don’t get along!”
The agent gave her a half-smile. “Mrs. Ratcliff, I never said you put anything in Reese’s pocket. But since you’ve already admitted it, why don’t you come with us and explain everything?”
He glanced at the butler, his voice cold. “At this point, there’s no one left who can save you.”
Before Jane could say another word, the agents each grabbed one of her arms and dragged her out to the car, ignoring her protests.
By the time they arrived at the Bureau, Jane’s legs felt like jelly, and she was practically carried out of the ear. As they walked inside, they passed Matthew, who was gently helping Reese out. The lead agent, who’d worked with Matthew before, gave him a nod as they passed.
Jane spotted Reese and instantly latched onto her like a lifeline. She struggled against the agents, calling out desperately, “Reese! Please, help me! I didn’t know what that little box was, swear! I had no idea Leslie was a spy! I’m sorry, I’ll never go after you agam, just help me this once! Robbie’s all alone at home. You’re not really going to just leave him, are you?”
She thought that mentioning Robbie would at least make Reese stop, even if they never got along. But Reese didn’t pause for even a second. She didn’t glance at Jane, didn’t say a word. She just leaned on Matthew and walked straight out the front doors.
Matthew, on the other hand, did look back at Jane. The look in his eyes was complicated, full of things Jane couldn’t understand. Her heart skipped a beat, a sudden sense of dread washing over her. It felt like he knew everything, and the realization made her panic.
While she was still in shock, the agents led Jane into an interrogation room. Sebastian was already inside.
Sebastian had already been questioned once; his statement had been taken to Leslie’s room. When he saw Jane dragged in and dropped into a chair, he froze for a moment, then lowered his head as if nothing happened.
“Sebastian, what’s going on? Why did they bring me here? Is this something you did?” Jane demanded, her voice trembling.
Sebastian slowly raised his head, his eyes bloodshot and tired. He stared at Jane. “Mom, was Grandpa killed by Leslie? Did you help her put something in Reese’s pocket? Why would you help her?”
Jane’s heart skipped a beat. She
looked away, trying to avoid his
gaze. “What are you talking about? It
was Reese who hurt your
grandfather not Lestre! And I didn’t even know what that thing was was just doing Leslie a small favor. I never thought she’d dare go this far!”
Her panic was growing by the second. She looked at Sebastian, her voice shaky.
“This is all Leslie’s doing, right? It’s got nothing to do with us, has it?”
