Reese glanced over the evidence spread out on the table, her voice steady and unyielding. “I just want you to understand that if you do something wrong, you have to face the consequences.”
“My mom never got the justice she deserved. I’m going to make sure every single person who took part in that dirty deal pays for it. That’s the only way I can give my mom some peace.”
She didn’t wait for Bailey to respond. Without another look in his direction, Reese turned and walked out of the interrogation room. The door slammed shut behind her, cutting them off from each other completely.
Bailey sat there, Reese’s words echoing in his mind, making it almost impossible to breathe. He felt the urge to confess welling up inside him, but before he could say anything, the phone in the corner started ringing, sharp and urgent.
One of the officers picked up. After a few tense seconds, his face changed and he turned quickly to Roman.
“Mr. Sanchez, we got news. They caught Nathaniel on the rooftop. He fought back, even tried to grab an officer’s gun. He got shot. He’s in the hospital now. The doctors say his condition is serious, but he came to and asked to see Bailey by name.”
Bailey felt like he’d been struck by lightning at the mention of Nathaniel. A mix of emotions flickered across his face.
