Chapter 410
Bridger Lake Airport buzzed with arrivals, but Matthew only had eyes for Hank. He watched as Hank stepped out, surrounded by bodyguards, and let out a breath when he saw he was okay.
“I’m just glad you made it,” Matthew said, his relief obvious.
Hank swallowed and handed over the scanner. “But Karter and the others
Matthew glanced at Reese, who was headed their way, and cut him off. “Reese knows Karter, but she has no idea he works for me. Don’t let anything slip, Mr. Meyer.” He took the scanner from Hank, and even though he tried to play it cool, his hand shook just enough to give him away. “Trust me, Karter’s not going to die.”
Seeing Matthew like this, Hank felt like an audience for a romance movie. For someone as sharp as him, he sure wasn’t hiding his feelings well. No one was immune to the way love could mess with your head.
Hank slid his hand in his pocket and felt something crumple. Remembering the note, he pulled out the worn piece of paper and handed it to Matthew. “I found this under the velvet lining in the box. The address is half gone, but you can make out ‘West Side old pier, warehouse three.’ The rest is water damaged.”
Matthew took the note, folded it neatly, and slipped it into his suit jacket. “I’ll have someone dig into it. Give me three days, I’ll get you answers.”
Reese, who had seen Hank from the car, hurried over. When she saw he was okay, she let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding. “You got it?” she asked.
“Right here,” Matthew said, holding up the scanner. “Let’s head back. I’ll make a copy for you. Roman’s handling your mother’s case, right? Give it to him tomorrow.”
“Got it.” Reese nodded, falling into step beside Matthew as she pulled out her phone and started typing.
Hank’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out and saw a message from Reese.
[You came back by yourself? Where’s Karter?]
Hank couldn’t help but smile. Of course Reese had caught on. Thıs text ıs hosted at (.)net
[He’s fine, don’t worry,] he replied. With Matthew’s reassurance and not wanting to worry her, he kept quiet about Karter being missing.
Sunlight broke through the clouds and spilled across the top floor office at Ramos Corporation.
Reese walked in, set the USB drive with the documents from the metal box into her safe, and planned to stop by the police station after work. She had barely closed the safe when her assistant came in.
“Ms. Meyer, there are police officers downstairs. They want to speak with you.”
Reese just smiled, calm as ever. “Send them up.”
Bailey really wasn’t wasting any time. He must have handed over whatever dirt he had on Dylon to the police overnight, hoping to pressure her into dropping her case. Did he really think she’d back down?
Footsteps echoed down the hallway. Several officers entered, led by her assistant. When Reese saw who was in charge, her smile grew.
“Detective Sanchez.”
“Ms. Meyer, sorry to bother you.”
Roman walked in with two other officers, handing her an official notice. “We got a tip off about Dylon, says he was embezzling and cooking the books when he worked at Ramos Corporation. Since I handled his short-selling case, they sent me to follow up.”
Roman looked at Reese, a touch of sympathy in his eyes.
“I know about it, Detective,” Reese said, taking the notice and setting it on her desk: She pulled out a folder “I’ve been collecting evidence myself but I wasn’t sure if it was enough for a case, so I hadn’t reached out yet. I’m not sure who was kind enough to put all this together for me.”
Roman flipped through the folder, his frown deepening with every page. “This is solid. It lines up with what the tipster handed in and proves his motive for manipulating the stock. This could be the breakthrough we needed.”
