Baron seized Natalie’s wrist and bolted.

For a moment Natalie had been stung by his words, but seeing him pull her like that, she understood exactly what he meant. She kicked at the floor, scrambling to keep up.
The mercenaries around them froze, caught off guard.
Anna screamed and raged. “You idiots! What are you standing there for? Throw that Baron into the sea and feed him to the fish!”
—
Baron dragged Natalie toward the exit, running as bullets began to click and men shouted behind them. “I timed it Yvonne and the others should be close. You get outside and wait for them. Leave these people to me.”
Natalie’s worry flared. “Can you handle it alone? Who knows how many more they’ve got hidden! Baron, come with me – we go together.”
She refused to let go.
Baron smiled, and for a beat the warehouse seemed to brighten. Sunlight streamed through the windows, catching the curve of his mouth; the expression hit Natalie in the chest like something out of a memory. He’d never looked more handsome.
“Be good. Do as I say. There’s nothing stopping them low and steady.
– run out now,” he murmured, his voice
Natalie shook her head. “I’m not leaving you to face them alone. Baron, you’re human can get hurt.”

you
Her eyes welled with tears. She hadn’t meant to cry, but the fear felt the same as when Jensen had nearly died five years ago. The feeling surprised her – had she begun to care for Baron?
Baron’s chest ached. He wanted her to love him, but not like this, not in the middle of a firefight. He reached out and ruffled her hair, tension melting into something warmer.
“Don’t be stubborn. Of course I’ll be fine. You know who I am – me down easily.”
Natalie’s face lit with an old, familiar softness

the same look she’d worn when she first met
him years ago, on foreign streets. It filled Baron with a fierce, private joy. He felt as if he’d reclaimed that younger, tender version of the girl who had once saved him.

“All right,” she whispered. “Then we go together.”
He took her hand. The touch–soft, warm flowed through him like electricity.

The mercenaries closed in faster, some drawing guns. Jensen, watching Baron pull Natalie toward the door, suddenly understood more than anger: Natalic had saved him five years ago; she had given him a rib to keep him alive. He owed her. If letting her escape gave him even a sliver of peace, he wanted it.
The first shots rang out.
“Natalie! Watch out!” Jensen yelled.
Without hesitation Baron dove, throwing himself over Natalie. He pinned her to the ground and covered her body with his own. Bullets whizzed just over their heads.
Anna went berserk. “Kill them! Stop them! If Natalie gets away, you’re all dead!”
Baron heard something else in her roar – a hint that she’d never been alone in this. He met Natalie’s eyes; both of them understood in that breath that there was a deeper threat.
Then, with a crash, the warehouse doors were thrown open. Blinding sunlight flooded the space, and for a stunned second both of them squinted at the brightness.
“Baron! Natalie!” Yvonne barreled through the doorway, breathless. She froze for a beat, taking in the sight of Baron kneeling over Natalie in the dirt, his clothes grimy, his composure utterly unglamorous.
Baron had always been an untouchable presence

proud, dangerous, untamed. Seeing him
like this, shielding Natalie, stripped the myth and made him human.
