Seeing Baron brought down from his pedestal into the dirt like that made Yvonne strangely tearful. He cared so much about Natalic.
“I’m sorry I’m late!” she called, then charged at the mercenaries behind her.
“Careful- they’ve got guns!” Natalie warned, panic flaring.
Yvonne barreled forward as if she didn’t mind dying. Westin, watching the cold killing intent in Baron’s eyes, understood immediately what Baron intended.
“Mr. Baron-” he shouted. “Don’t let Anna get away!”
Baron’s stare locked on Anna like an executioner’s. Anna hadn’t expected Baron’s people to arrive so fast. Terrified, she turned and ran–only to be cut off by Jensen.
“Where do you think you’re going, little woman?” Jensen snarled, his face hard as stone. Thᴇ link to the origɪn of this information rᴇsts ɪn
He’d just realized Anna was the one who’d doctored the Witch Doctor files and framed Natalie -ruining five years of his life and costing him a chance with Natalie. He wasn’t about to let her walk free.
Anna grabbed whatever she could find and hurled it at Jensen, but she was too small and the object too heavy. It tumbled instead–a sack of lime–and she stood there, mortified.
Jensen laughed in contempt. “You’re shorter than a bench and twice as rotten. People like you ought to be dealt with at birth–save the world the trouble.”
He grabbed her by the collar and hoisted her up.
“Put me down, Jensen! Are you stupid? If I get caught, do you think your mother will be fine? Don’t you know your mother is tied up with that baby–switch thing from twenty years ago? Would you trade me for your mother?” Anna kicked wildly, but her small legs flailed uselessly in the air.
Jensen hesitated–Loretta and Rachel’s connection flickered through his mind. His eyes narrowed.
“You actually know Rachel? What’s your relation to her?” he demanded.
Anna didn’t answer. Instead, seeing Jensen falter over Loretta, she hurriedly spat out, “Don’t worry about me and Rachel. Think about your mother. Jensen, if I get arrested, your mother won’t have a good time. She’s lived in the spotlight her whole life–do you want to send her

behind bars? Natalie doesn’t love you anymore; she didn’t risk herself for you just now. Would you give up your own mother for her?”
“Shut up!” Jensen snapped, torn.
Loretta had not always been demonstrative, but she had cared for him and fought for him in the family. In the cutthroat world they moved in, she’d been a constant–worrying, scheming, trying to secure his place. For all their complications, Loretta had been a good mother.
Anna saw Jensen’s distraction and pulled something from her sleeve, flinging it at his face. “You bastard!”
The object hit his eyes–powder stung his face and he coughed, loosening his grip. Anna seized the moment and bolted.
Baron had already seen Anna and Jensen speaking. He wasn’t about to give her another chance. He yanked her up by the hair after she’d only taken a couple of steps.
“Ahhh! It hurts! Who’s got no shame?” Anna wailed, swinging in midair.
Baron sneered. “So Mr. Jensen takes pity and lets you go, and now you think you’re clever? Did you ever ask me about it?”
Jensen wiped his face and spluttered, “I didn’t let her go!”
“You two were talking. She must’ve bribed you–otherwise how could Mr. Jensen be fooled by a little brat like her?” Baron shot back, determined to rile Jensen.
Jensen had no reply.
By then Yvonne and Westin had cleared the rest of the mercenaries. Natalie hurried over.
“Baron, are you okay?” she asked, scanning him first.
Baron shook his head and forced a grin. “I grabbed this runt. We’ll take her back and interrogate her properly.”
“ No. ” Jensen stepped in front of Baron abruptly, blocking him.
“What are you doing?” Baron’s face darkened.
Natalie looked between them, puzzled and worried.
