Beth knew she could never let Sam live. If Sam escaped and told Kasen, both she and her son were doomed.
But killing Sam also meant she herself was drained of strength, left without leverage. She could easily become the next piece of meat on the chopping block–helpless, disposable. And if Beth decided to silence her too, she wouldn’t even have the chance to wait for Baron.
She couldn’t die here.
Natalie quickly poured the powder into her mouth and swallowed.
It had no taste.
She had no idea how long it would take to work, only that she had to pray Beth and Sam’s struggle would last long enough to buy her time.
But fate was cruel.
Under Beth’s savage blows, Sam soon went limp, her blood soaking the blanket.
Natalie’s heart clenched as the warmth seeped across the floor, inching toward her clothes.
Beth slumped onto the ground, chest heaving.
The cabin rocked with the ship’s motion, the air heavy with the coppery stench of blood.
Natalie had never faced anything like this before. Her hands were ice cold, her limbs trembling. She had been brave a moment ago, but now all she felt was fear.
Beth glanced at her–her pale face, her body collapsed on the floor like a rag doll–and asked quietly, “Where did that awl come from?”
“From under the bed. I only just found it.”
Natalie didn’t hide it.

Beth blinked, then gave a low, bitter laugh. “No wonder the last woman locked up managed to escape. Turns out this was left behind. Lucky you. Do you still have any strength left?”
Natalie quickly shook her head.

Even though she could feel the faintest strength creeping back into her body, she dared not admit it.
Beth suddenly rose and stepped toward her. ᴜᴘᴅᴀᴛᴇ ꜰʀᴏᴍ.net
Natalie’s heart leapt into her throat.
“What are you going to do?”
Cold sweat poured down her back, soaking her clothes.
Beth saw her terror and understood–this was the first time Natalie had hurt someone.
Of course.
How could a woman with such poise and bearing have ever stained her hands with blood?
Beth felt a pang deep inside.
Once, she too had been an ordinary woman.
Her gaze flickered, complicated, before she spoke.
“Don’t worry. I’m not going to kill you. I told you, I need you to help me close this deal so I can save my son. But Sam—and that so–called ‘cargo‘ Sharon–can’t be left here.”
Natalie frowned. “You’re going to kill Sharon?”
Beth shook her head.
“Cargo can’t be killed. That would leave evidence. Natalie, you and I are tied together now. If I go down, you won’t live either. Your beauty won’t save you. The boss doesn’t tolerate mistakes.”
Natalie caught the meaning in her words.
Beth wasn’t planning to kill her.
Relief loosened her chest.
“What do you want me to do?”
Beth couldn’t help but admire her composure.
In another life, if they had met elsewhere, she might have wanted Natalie as a friend.

But here, that was impossible.

Forcing her thoughts back into order, Beth said flatly, “Sam was Kasen’s favorite. If she’s found dead here, neither of us will survive–we’ll both be dumped into the sea. So instead, we’ll say she ran away with Sharon and jumped into the ocean. If that story spreads, Kasen–being in charge of security–will have to investigate. But with the auction so close, he won’t dare make a scene. He’ll only tighten control over us to make sure we appear at the auction safe and intact.”
Natalie’s brows drew together.
“You promised me. If I helped you, you’d send out a message for me.”
Beth nodded.
“I will. But I’ll send it from Sam’s phone. Since we’re framing her for escaping with Sharon, that message has to be sent to someone Sharon knows. Someone closer to her than you are. That’s the only way it’ll be convincing.”
Natalie’s face darkened.
“That’s not what you said before.”
