Natalie quickly jumped up to ease the tension.
“Mom, what are you doing out of bed? The doctor said you need more rest, and-”
“Natalie, sit down.”
Ruby’s voice carried a force that filled the room.

Natalie froze mid–sentence. She opened her mouth to say more, but Flynn tugged her sleeve, pulling her back down beside him.
“Flynn, what’s going on?” she whispered.
“Quiet. Don’t say a word.”
Flynn seemed almost too familiar with this kind of situation.
Natalie hadn’t been home long, so she had no idea how to handle it; she decided it was safer to just listen to her brother. Waylon, seeing Ruby approach, instinctively tried to step back.
“Stand right there! Waylon, I dare you to take one more step!”
Ruby’s fury burned so hot it seemed to reach the ceiling. That trash. He’s been lying to me all these years!
Waylon hadn’t seen her this angry in decades. After witnessing her years of depression and near–suicidal despair, he had almost forgotten that Ruby had once been fierce–a woman who loved and hated with equal passion.
Seeing her like this again made his eyes sting.
“Sweetheart, I’m not running. I know I was wrong. If you want to hit me, yell at me–whatever you need–I’ll take it. It’s been over twenty years since I’ve seen you angry.”
His voice cracked, eyes brimming with tears.
Ruby faltered for a moment. He was right– it had been more than twenty years since she’d felt anything besides grief. This text is hosted at.net
Ever since Natalie’s death, her world had gone gray; all her senses had dulled until sadness and emptiness were all that remained.

Now, hearing Waylon’s trembling words, she felt as if she’d stepped into another lifetime–but the feeling didn’t last long.
“Don’t think saying that will make me forgive you. Waylon, you’d better explain yourself right now. Where is my son–where’s Moses?”
Ruby strode forward, grabbed Waylon by the ear, and shouted furiously.
He bent down to appease her, wincing as he begged for mercy. “Ow, ow, my dear–take it easy! The kids are right here; can you at least let me keep a little dignity?”
“Dignity? You still think you deserve dignity?” she roared. “My son–the child I carried, the one I treasured–you just decided to send him away? Fine, sending him off to serve the country I can understand! But you lied to me–you staged a fake car accident! You made me believe my son died in that crash! Do you have any idea what it felt like, seeing Moses’s body mangled beyond recognition?”
Her eyes flushed red with tears.
Natalie wanted to speak up, but Flynn shook his head sharply, signaling her to stay silent.
She obeyed. Moses? So that’s my older brother’s name. What a beautiful name.
The
Waylon couldn’t even think about how his children were reacting. The moment Ruby’s tears fell, panic washed over him.
“I just didn’t want you to keep clinging to him. Moses has already been turned over to the government; once they’re working on classified projects, they rarely come back. My sister’s been in that research institute her whole life–I don’t even know what she looks like now. If you’d known Moses was still alive, you would’ve spent your whole life waiting for him, hoping he’d come home; but he never could. That kind of hope would’ve destroyed you. I thought… short pain was better than long pain. If you believed he was gone, you wouldn’t have to live with that endless waiting.”
“Better for who? That’s my son! My son! You just planted a seed; I carried him for ten months and nearly died giving birth to him! What right did you have to keep me from knowing if he was alive or dead? Even if I could never see him again, at least I’d know he was alive in this world–that he was serving his country–and I would’ve been proud! Waylon, you scumbag! What right did you have to keep that from me? What right?”
Ruby’s voice broke into a sob as she pounded her fists against his chest over and over.
Natalie grew anxious seeing her mother so agitated.
“Flynn, shouldn’t we do something? Is mom really okay like this? ”

She couldn’t forget how fragile Ruby had been just a short while ago, lying weak and pale on
the floor.
Flynn’s eyes
reddened.
“Natalie, you don’t understand… it’s been years since we’ve seen her like this. Don’t version of mom–angry, yelling, alive–is so much better than the silent one.”

Natalie glanced at him, her heart tightening.
Maybe he was right. When someone’s been depressed for too long, they forget what it feels like to feel anything else.
Ruby’s fury–her outburst–might actually be a sign that she was finally coming back to life. Natalie’s lips
