“Of course he’s alive. The Stone family has already wronged that child enough; so your mother and I discussed it, and we decided to let him inherit Xenon’s branch of the family–to become Xenon’s descendant. We originally planned to bring him abroad to live with us, but he refused; he said he wanted to stay here, to look after the Stone family and watch over his parents‘ resting place. That boy was grateful by nature. He said this was where both his birth parents and adoptive parents were buried; this was his home. Because of him, I had Xenon’s villa repaired and agreed to the planting of trees. That’s how the Stone residence has stayed as it is to this day.”
He sighed. “Your mother and I should’ve come to see him when we returned, but there was too much going on, and I didn’t want to upset her emotionally. So I never came. That child, though he called us when he heard we were back, asked if we wanted to visit. I turned him down.”
Baron frowned suddenly. “Dad, when the fire happened–how old was that child?”
“He was eight.”
Baron repeated the number under his breath. “Eight? Old enough to remember everything.”

Baron didn’t answer right away; Natalie spoke first.
“Dad, what Baron means is that an eight–year–old who watched his entire family burn to death -and all because of Uncle Xenon–don’t you think he might’ve grown to resent the Stone family? Maybe even hate being chosen as Xenon’s heir?”
Waylon’s expression darkened as her meaning sank in.
“You’re saying he’s been holding a grudge all these years? That the person who kidnapped Natalie and teamed up with outsiders to destroy the Stone family is Alden?”
Before Natalie or Baron could respond, Waylon shook his head immediately.
“No, no! Alden isn’t that kind of child. Every year he sends gifts to your mother and me–fruits and herbs he grows himself in the backyard. He even refused to join Stone Group, said he preferred a simple, pastoral life. How could someone like that be the person you’re describing?

Natalie didn’t know how to respond.
She had never met Alden, never spoken to him; she couldn’t say what kind of person he really was. She was only following the logic of what Waylon had said.
Human nature isn’t something you can fully predict.
Seeing both of them fall silent, Baron spoke up. “Dad, honey, talking about it won’t get us anywhere. We should go see for ourselves. Now that Yvonne’s been hurt here, I can’t believe it’s just an accident. Whether Alden’s human or something else–we’ll find out soon enough.”
“Alright.”
Waylon wasn’t a superstitious man.
He trusted Alden, but Natalie and Baron had a point–people were unpredictable.
After all, Alden had witnessed his own parents die in front of him. Who could say that trauma hadn’t turned into a lifelong nightmare?
Once Waylon agreed, Baron took Natalie’s hand and said softly, “When we go in, just stay close to me. If anything happens, stay behind me.”
“Oh, please,” Natalie shot back with a faint smile. “You think you’re my personal bodyguard now? Acting like you’re bulletproof, Mr. Baron? Did you forget you’re still recovering from your injuries?”
With that, she poked a finger right where his wound was.
Baron winced and immediately caught her mischievous hand.
“My dear, that’s called attempted murder.”
Natalie couldn’t help laughing, her lips curling as her eyes sparkled–so bright that Baron felt himself sinking into them.
He brought her finger to his lips and gave it a playful nip. Natalie jerked her hand back, her face flushing red all the way to her neck.
From the corner of his eye, Waylon caught the scene and couldn’t help feeling a little envious. Ah, to be young again.

The guard was new and didn’t recognize Waylon at all.
Waylon could only laugh in disbelief. His own home–and he was being told to get out.
