Chapter 18

“Ah!”
Dahlia let out a shrill scream from her throat, freezing for several seconds before tremblingly turning off the kettle. “Mommy!”
Sandy, who had come over unnoticed, saw Dahlia’s hand scalded by the boiling water. After crying out for her mom, she suddenly turned and ran towards Charles, who was not far away. Like finding her rock, she cried, “Daddy… daddy…” Charles was on the phone, but he immediately hung up, crouched down, and lifted the tear-streaked Sandy into his arms. “Sandy, what happened?”
“Daddy, Ms. Evelyn burned Mommy’s hand.”
Charles’ expression changed instantly. Holding Sandy, he quickly walked towards the break room.
The onlookers, attracted by the commotion, were stopped in their tracks by a look from Charles. No one dared to come closer.
Charles carried Sandy in, closing the door behind them with a backhand.
“Charles…” Dahlia’s eyes were red, her voice trembling with pain she was desperately trying to hide. That call carried so much hurt.
Charles’ gaze turned icy as he glanced at Evelyn. He quickly walked over to Dahlia, took her arm, and placed her scalded hand under cold running water.
Dahlia couldn’t help but cry out in pain, her lips quivering. She looked so pitiful.
“Just hold on.” Charles’ face was filled with distress as he softly comforted her.
The more he comforted her, the redder Dahlia’s eyes became. Tears swirled in her eyes.
Evelyn couldn’t watch this melodrama, and turned to leave.
Dahlia’s injury didn’t affect her at all. She was no saint; if she hadn’t acted quickly, it would have been her instead of Dahlia who got scalded.
“Evelyn, stop!” Charles’ cold rebuke stopped her in her tracks.
To think Dahlia was injured and she showed no remorse.
Evelyn kept walking, ignoring him.
Charles let go of Dahlia and quickly walked up to Evelyn, grabbing her wrist harshly and pulling her back. With a fierce tone, he said, “Evelyn, how could you be so cruel! Why did you hurt Dahlia’s hand? Don’t you know how important her hands are to her?” Evelyn watched Charles, who was hastily judging her guilty.
In the past, she would be deeply hurt if Charles wronged her. She feared Charles misunderstanding her even more. Thus, she would incessantly try to defend herself.
Now she knew, a man whose heart was biased from the beginning would never change, even if the truth was right before his eyes.
The Evelyn who always tried to prove herself in front of him, was truly foolish.
Evelyn raised her eyes to the imposing Charles and scoffed, “You say I hurt Dahlia? Where’s the proof?”
The accuser bears the burden of proof.
There were no cameras installed in this break room. It was precisely because there were no cameras that Dahlia dared to so recklessly attempt to scald her hand.
Seeing Evelyn denying it, Sandy clung to Charles’ legs, crying out, “Daddy, I saw Ms. Evelyn use boiling water to burn Mommy. Mommy taught me that when a kid makes a mistake, they should admit to their wrongdoing. Why won’t Ms. Evelyn admit it?” “Don’t cry. Daddy believes you.” Charles comforted Sandy.
Then, he looked up with a frosty face, and said in an extremely cold tone, “Sandy’s word is evidence! She’s only five years old. Why would she lie?”
