Chapter 58

Carmen sat in her chair, eyes coldly fixed on Evelyn. She found Evelyn’s face irksome from the first glance.
She looked too much like that woman.
Evelyn stood still, not moving. She swallowed down the words she had to prove she wasn’t guilty.
In the Jenkins family, Carmen hated Evelyn the most.
Evelyn had thought that today, at the very least, Charles would give her a chance to explain. She never expected that he still took Dahlia and her daughter’s words as gospel. Evelyn didn’t even get a chance to defend herself.
She pressed her lips tightly together, fighting the sense of powerlessness within her. She was facing an opponent with backing and found it hard to move forward.
“My mother said to kneel!” Sena’s eyes gleamed with satisfaction.
She despised Evelyn to the core.
Sena had come to the Jenkins family with her mother when she was little. Sena’s mother told her to win over her grandmother, but Rosa didn’t like her. Rosa preferred Evelyn instead. Rosa would protect her at every turn. It wasn’t just Rosa. Even Charles was openly and secretly guarding Evelyn. Over the years, Sena had never gained the upper hand over Evelyn. Today presented such a good opportunity. She wouldn’t let Evelyn off.
Sena strode behind her, lifted her leg, and fiercely kicked Evelyn’s knee.
Evelyn was hurt and bent her knee. With a thump, she knelt on the cold ground.
Evelyn immediately tried to stand, but two servants harshly pressed her down, forcibly keeping her on the ground. She struggled but was pinned down tightly, unable to move. Carmen commanded sharply, “Use the ruler.”
At her command, a servant immediately went to one side to pick up a long ruler. They repeatedly and harshly whipped it across Evelyn’s back.
“Ugh.” Evelyn clenched her teeth, refusing to let herself cry out.
Carmen noticed Evelyn’s stubborn face, and her eyes turned even colder.
Sena wanted to see Evelyn beg for mercy. She watched Evelyn endure ten strikes without even a grunt and was unsatisfied. Sena went to grab the most severe whip used for the family punishment.
The whip was custom-made, covered with dense barbs, capable of not only tearing flesh but also hooking to it, deep enough to reveal the bone. This was a punishment reserved for Jenkins family members who committed grave offenses.
Carmen saw Sena pick it up and did not stop her.
With a “crack!” Sena whipped the air, creating a piercing sound. She intentionally scared Evelyn, wanting to torment her.
Evelyn just coldly looked at Sena.
Sena couldn’t see the anticipated fear in Evelyn’s eyes or hear her beg for mercy, and she was furious. This time, she didn’t hold back and lifted the whip. The whip sliced through the air, aiming for Evelyn.
Just before it hit, the shrine room door was suddenly kicked open, and a commanding voice from the doorway boomed, “I’d like to see who dares touch Eve!” This voice was calm and commanding, holding immense authority and deterrence in the Jenkins family.
Carmen immediately stood up. Sena was frightened and shook her hand. The whip was quickly retracted. The rebounding force caused the whip to harshly snap back onto her own thigh. Her thigh instantly tore open. The whip was thrown aside dragging away fresh flesh.
“Ah!” Sena screamed out in pain.
Carmen saw the person at the door. “Mom!”
Sena, enduring the pain, timidly called out, “Grandma!”
The servants were terrified and trembled. “Ma’am!”
Everyone was afraid of Rosa except for Evelyn. She excitedly stood up and rushed over. “Rosa.”
“My dear Eve, are you alright?” Rosa took Evelyn into her arms, anxiously looking her over. “I’m fine.”
