Maggie and Johnny acted as though they hadn’t seen him at all. Kevin, smiling, stepped forward. “Franklin, let’s go upstairs.” Franklin nodded. As they walked away, Johnny gave a sharp, humorless laugh. “They’re already this arrogant even before you two are divorced,” he muttered. “I can’t imagine how unbearable —- they’ll be after.
If you didn’t have Cole, or your teacher, or me, they’d probably crush you alive.” Maggie pressed her lips together, saying nothing. Just then, Nolan and Yulia arrived. Upstairs, the Brown and Green families were being attended to by the restaurant manager himself. They exchanged pleasantries for a bit, delaying their elevator ride-just long enough to see Maggie’s group nearby. Yulia was walking beside Maggie, holding her hand as they chatted, while Nolan followed with Johnny. The sight clearly made the Brown and Green families uncomfortable. Their smiles stiffened immediately.
They knew Yulia and Nolan were heavyweights in their respective industries, and Johnny’s career was rising fast. —- With people like that close to her, Maggie’s future was secure, even without Franklin. No wonder she was so willing to end things and move on. Old Mrs. Green gave a thin, cool smile. “She really does have good luck.” First Franklin, now such powerful allies. Even without Franklin, she would still live well. Sophia, burning with jealousy, glared hard at Maggie’s back as she disappeared toward the escalator. The two groups took different paths and didn’t cross —- again. After dinner, Maggie and Johnny went with Nolan to his residence. They discussed several ongoing projects and logistics. By then, her schedule for traveling to the base had been more or less confirmed. Taking that into account, Maggie realized that a mutual agreement divorce would be smoother than a court petition.
When she left Nolan’s place, she sat in her car, opened her phone, and sent Franklin a short message: [Let’s go handle the divorce paperwork the day after tomorrow.] The day after tomorrow would be Monday. She put her phone away and drove home. By the time she’d showered and dried her hair, a reply —- finally came. [Okay.] Maggie set the phone down, expression unreadable. At the office, she tried to focus on work but kept glancing at her phone. The screen stayed still. It wasn’t until a little past two in the afternoon that Franklin finally texted again: [I’ll head over soon.
