Green frowned with worry. “Do you think Franklin won’t make it back before the decision period ends?” —- Even Janice, who usually stayed composed, showed unease. Dragging things out any longer wasn’t good for anyone. Old Mrs. Brown turned to Julia. “Julia, what did Franklin say?” Julia came back to herself and answered honestly, “He said he’s not sure yet.” The Green and Brown families exchanged anxious looks. Old Mrs. Green sighed. “Once he’s finished, I’m sure he’ll return as soon as he can. Let’s hope it’s in time.
There’s still half a month left, after all.” Julia lowered her eyes and said nothing. Since Franklin wouldn’t be back soon, Maggie assumed that once he was finished with work, he’d contact her himself about finalizing the divorce. So she simply carried on with her routine, going to work and coming home as usual. —- Work had been busy lately anyway; she didn’t have much time to dwell on other things. Before she realized it, another week had passed. And there was only a little more than a week left before the end of the decision period.
That evening, Maggie glanced at the time, then at Isabella, who was lying on the floor playing a game. “Isabella,” she called. Isabella looked up. “Yes, Mom?” Maggie hesitated. “Did your dad say when he’ll be back?” Isabella shook her head. “I asked him tonight. He said not so soon.” Maggie fell quiet. “Mom?” Isabella asked softly. “Nothing. It’s late-go to bed early.” —- “Okay!” Even though Isabella said Franklin wouldn’t return soon, Maggie still wanted to know the exact date.
After Isabella went to sleep, she sent him a message: [When will you be back in the U.S.?] Because of the time difference, she didn’t get a reply until the next day at noon. [Not certain yet] Franklin wrote. There were barely any days left. If he wasn’t sure now, when would he ever be? As Maggie was about to reply, another message came in: {I’ll let you know as soon as it’s confirmed.] That same empty promise again. Maggie put down her phone and didn’t respond. —- Franklin didn’t send anything else either. From that day on, they stopped contacting each other.
Maybe Franklin was truly overwhelmed with work-because he didn’t reach out at all for the next several days. Then came the final day of their decision period. When Johnny saw Maggie arrive at the office early that morning, he immediately understood-she and Franklin still hadn’t finalized the divorce. Seeing her expression, he tried to comfort her. “There’s still time. Maybe Franklin will make it back this afternoon.” Maggie could only nod, hoping so too. But as the hours passed, she checked her phone again and again.
By the time the clock passed five in the evening, there was still not a single message from Franklin.
