He’d been wondering for a long time what kind of man could keep someone like Maggie tied up in such a complicated situation. But then he stopped himself. Ever since she learned about his feelings, Maggie had been keeping her distance.
If she found out he had followed her out of curiosity, she would be furious. So in the end, he just watched her leave, the sound of her heels fading down the hallway, before turning back to his office. About ten minutes later, Franklin hurried into the Civil Center. He was slightly out of breath, his expression apologetic. —- “Sorry,” he said. “The meeting ran over by about ten minutes. I came as fast as I could.” Maggie looked him over, his shirt sleeves rolled up, his hair slightly disheveled, phone still in his hand. He did look genuinely busy. “It’s fine,” she said calmly.
“Let’s just get this done.” “Okay.” Even while they went through the paperwork, Franklin’s phone didn’t stop ringing. When it came time to sign, Maggie had to wait several minutes for him to finish another call. Only then did they officially complete the divorce procedure. He had, in a way, taken time out of his packed schedule just to end their marriage. Once everything was finalized, Maggie was ready to leave —- when Franklin spoke again. “T’ve got some work to finish. I’ll reach out later when I have time.” Maggie didn’t even glance back. There was nothing left for them to talk about.
That was all she said before walking out, getting into her car, and driving away from the Civil Center. The next two days flew by; she was buried in work again. By Thursday, Maggie had another meeting at Wilson Corp. This time, Franklin didn’t show up. But when she and Claremont were leaving for lunch, they saw him downstairs, with Julia. Julia was holding onto his arm, leaning close as they smiled and chatted with someone nearby. —- Claremont followed her gaze and gave a light laugh. “Mr. Wilson and Mrs.

He had even gone through the trouble of taking Maggie to the Civil Center again, just to finalize the divorce Julia had always wanted. That, to Julia, was proof enough. No matter what had passed between Franklin and Maggie, the person he truly loved was still her.
Maggie had never been a real threat. When Maggie sensed Julia’s stare, she didn’t respond. —- At that moment, Franklin turned and noticed her too. Before he could say anything, she looked away, face calm and distant, and got into the car with Claremont and the others. Without a word, she closed the door, and the car pulled away, leaving Franklin standing in the sunlight with Julia still on his arm.
