Chapter 117
Mamie flashed a soft smile. “Yeah, today was my first day. I spent most of it just getting to know how things work around the office p>
Dorothea tried to keep the conversation going. “Do you drive p>
Mamie shook her head. “No, I just got back. I still need to get a local license p>
Dorothea nodded, relieved when the elevator doors finally opened and they reached the lobby.
“I’m heading out,” Dorothea said. “See you tomorrow p>
Mamie replied with a mild, “See you tomorrow p>
Outside, Dorothea spotted the Bentley parked by the entrance. She was surprised to see Garth waiting for her on the sidewalk.
She jogged over and playfully pinched his earlobe. “Why aren’t you waiting in the car p>
“I just couldn’t wait any longer p>
“That works out. We can just walk from here p>
Dorothea took Garth’s hand and led him to their favorite little shop. They’d been there together three times already. She ended up buying three cute little hair clips in
a row.
“Garth, you don’t have to give all of these at once. Spread them out a bit p>
Garth grinned, almost proud. “Why? My uncle says you can’t win a wife by being stingy p>
Dorothea pressed a palm to her forehead. She wondered what Latham had been telling this kid.
She couldn’t help but laugh. “Well, you do whatever your uncle says, then p>
Back in the car, Garth had downed a ton of water. Suddenly, he started squirming in his seat. “Aunt Dorothea, I need to pee p>
Dorothea saw his cheeks turning red and quickly took him to the restroom. “Can you go in by yourself p>
Garth puffed up his little chest. “Of course I can p>
Dorothea turned away and took a work call while she waited.
When Garth came out, he spotted Dorothea’s back and was about to run to her, but then someone passed by and caught his eye.
“Mom he whispered.
Without thinking, he raced after the woman. “Mom p>
Dorothea had just finished her call when she saw Garth dash right by her. “Garth, I’m right here p>
He didn’t seem to hear. Dorothea hurried after him, her heels clacking against the floor.
Garth finally caught up and grabbed the corner of the woman’s coat, his voice small but clear. “Mom p>
The woman turned around, looking completely stunned. “Hey there, little guy. I think you’ve got the wrong person p>
Garth’s eyes shimmered with tears. “No, I didn’t get it wrong. You are my mom! I know you. Don’t you remember me? I’m Garth p>
The woman glanced down, her face a mix of confusion and concern. It was like she was searching her memory, but nothing came to mind.
She gave a gentle laugh and shook
her head. “Sorry, kiddo. You’ve got
the wrong person. I’m not youre
not your
mom. I’m single, never married
definitely no kids.” fo
“Garth p>
Dorothea finally caught up, out of breath and wobbling a little on her heels. She
looked at the two of them, confused. “Mamie p>
Mamie was just as surprised. “Dorothea? Is this your child p>
Dorothea noticed Garth still hanging on to Mamie’s coat and gently patted his head Garth let go honey. That’s not polite. Come be good p>
But for once, the usually
on
well-behaved Garth refused to listen. He shook his head, holding on even tighter. “Aunt Dorothea, this is my mom! I won’t let go. If I do, she’ll
leave again p>
Dorothea raised an eyebrow, glancing over at Mamie, unsure what to think. “Are you p>
Mamie looked apologetic. “Sorry, Dorothea. I really don’t know him. Maybe I just look like his mom p>
Dorothea quickly apologized, flustered. “I’m so sorry. He’s usually never like this. I don’t know what happened p>
Mamie didn’t seem bothered. “I actually have a table reserved at this restaurant. If you’re free, why don’t you both join me for dinner p>
Dorothea instinctively wanted to say no, but then she saw the hope in Garth’s eyes. She gave in, though she felt awkward.
“All right… thank you. Sorry for the trouble p>
