Chapter 74

Dorothea didn’t give much thought to the whole Fidelia situation at first. It was only when she was going through last year’s business reports that something odd jumped out at her. Fidelia’s team had the lowest numbers, year after year, always dead last. Yet somehow, Fidelia’s paycheck was just as high as everyone else’s. In fact, at the supervisor level, she was earning just as much as the supervisor of the top-performing team.

Curious, Dorothea had Nash pull up some data. Turns out, Fidelia had only been with the company for two years and had already climbed up to a supervisor position. No matter how you spun it, it looked like she had some powerful connections higher up. Who those connections were, Dorothea still didn’t know.

She grabbed the report and went straight to Lenard’s office.

“Lenard, do you have a minute p>

He looked up from his computer, a rare break in his day. “Dorothea, what’s up p>

She got right to the point. “I wanted to talk about how salaries are distributed in the sales department p>

Lenard’s eyebrow arched, just a little. “You mean Fidelia, right p>

Dorothea hadn’t expected him to call it out like that. Her main worry was that Lenard was the one who’d put Fidelia in her position. But with him being so upfront, it was probably not him.

“Fidelia was placed in our department by someone. Her salary’s being topped up by someone else,” Lenard said.

Dorothea narrowed her eyes. “Who p>

Lenard just smiled, not giving anything away. “If I told you now, wouldn’t that look like I’m picking a side too early p>

In that instant, Dorothea understood exactly who was behind Fidelia.

“Lenard, there are no sides to pick. I own the majority of this company. Even Walton can’t tell anyone where their loyalties should be p>

Her confidence made Lenard look at her with new respect.

“So you’re Eaton’s daughter p>

When Lenard first joined the company, Dorothea’s father had already passed away. Lenard was the only old-timer who hadn’t been pushed out. It just went to show how sharp he was.

Dorothea appreciated smart people. “Does anyone else know about this p>

Lenard shook his head, still smiling. “No one but me p>

It made sense. No one else would have access to the real sales numbers. Besides,

employees weren’t allowed to talk about their salaries anyway.

Dorothea nodded, grinning to herself as another thought hit her. Her aunt-in-law worked in finance. Hadn’t she noticed any of this?. Dorothea was always ready to help out so she wasted no time and hired a private investigator to dig into Fidelia’s background?

When work ended, Dorothea found herself dragging her feet. She really didn’t want

to go home. She had no idea how she was supposed to face Latham after everything that happened.

Too bad for her. Latham’s car was already parked outside their office building. [Latham: Get in p>

She spotted that ridiculously flashy purple car and let out a sigh. “A Bugatti. Limited edition. Seriously, who’s he trying to impress p>

Dorothea sped up, heading for the back exit. [Come to the back door. There are too many people at the front. Next time you pick me up, try a different car, please p>

Latham read her message, then

made a little clicking sound with bis tongue After last night, Dorothea’s

whole attitude toward him had

shifted. It was like she couldn’t hide

her annoyance anymore.

Not that it bothered Latham. He drove around to the back, then got out and opened

the door for her, all gentlemanly.

Dorothea jumped in fast. “Come on, let’s go p>

Latham hit the gas and eased the car into traffic. He looked over with a teasing grin.

“I am your legal husband, you know. Am I really that embarrassing p>

Dorothea pressed her lips together. “Mr. Stephens, we need to be clear about a few things. What happened yesterday was an accident, and I’m willing to let it go. But since you like men let’s just keep our distance unless we’re putting on a show for your family p>
