Chapter 164
Dorothea pushed Latham away, her voice a little softer and sweeter than she realized. “Who wants to stick around with you p>
Latham just laughed and took a step back, slipping one hand into his pocket. There was a hint of a smile on his lips. “So that’s it? You really do just use people and toss them aside, huh p>
Dorothea turned her head, refusing to answer. The truth was, she didn’t have a good excuse.
Latham’s gaze darkened and the teasing left his voice. “Are you really that scared Albert will find out p>
“I’m not scared,” Dorothea replied quickly.
“I’m just not ready to go public right now. His wedding is coming up. I’ll give him a big surprise at the ceremony p>
Albert’s wedding was less than a week away.
Latham didn’t say anything. He narrowed his eyes as if he didn’t care, but deep down, he couldn’t shake the feeling that Dorothea still had feelings for Albert.
After leaving the terrace, Albert went back to the private room. The urge to keep drinking was gone. He grabbed his jacket. “I’m heading out. You guys have fun p>
Someone joked, “Haha, Albert’s off to keep Dorothea company p>
Albert’s eyes flickered. Suddenly, he felt a pang of guilt toward Carola for what he’d just done. He pulled out his phone and called her. “Are you asleep p>
Carola sounded extra happy to hear from him. “Albert, I’m not asleep p>
“I got you some late-night snacks. Wait for me. I’ll be at your place in an hour p>
Carola twisted the bedsheet in her fingers, her face turning pink. “Okay, I’ll wait for you p>
Maybe she’d just been overthinking things before. Once the wedding was over, she was sure Albert would only have eyes for her. Dorothea or any other woman-they were just stand-ins.
Mamie headed to the tax office today to meet with the tax officer. Someone on her team had annoyed him, so now she had to smooth things over herself.
She was supposed to be there by three thirty, but halfway there her car broke down: Mamie had no idea what was wrong, She didn’t know anything about cars, so she pulled over, turned on her flashers, and called for a tow truck.
The tow truck wasn’t coming anytime soon. Even with a quick trip to the repair shop, she’d be lucky if it only set her back an hour. By then, the tax officer would be long gone.
Just as she was about to call for help, a discreet black sedan pulled up behind her. The license plate looked familiar. A moment later, Scott stepped out.
“Car trouble?” Scott asked, his tone calm.
Mamie forgot to even say hello, just answered, “Yeah p>
“Need a hand p>
Mamie didn’t want to bother Scott, but she was running out of options. “I have an appointment with the tax officer and I’m really short on time. Could you maybe p>
Scott didn’t wait for her to finish. He turned to his driver. “Dixon, call a tow truck and take the car to the repair shop p>
He looked back at Mamie. “Don’t worry, he’ll take care of it p>
Mamie quickly exchanged numbers with Scott’s driver and thanked them. “Thank you. Sorry for all the trouble p>
Scott raised his eyebrows slightly. “Which district is your tax office in p>
Mamie tried to turn him down. “It’s fine, really. I can just grab a cab p>
“Come on. You have an appointment. Being late is a hassle p>
She gave him the address, and Scott smiled. “Perfect. I have a meeting right next door anyway. It’s on the way p>
Sitting in Scott’s car again, Mamie felt like she really owed him a meal now. “Scott, thank you so much today. Whenever you and Garth are free let me take you both out to
dinner. We can invite Dorothea and Latham too p>
