Chapter 169
Dorothea froze for a second. They had only been apart for a few hours, so why was he suddenly so prickly?
Latham pressed his lips together. “Take my car. I’ll drive you tomorrow. Just leave yours at the office p>
Dorothea didn’t bother arguing. She opened the passenger door and got in.
As Latham buckled his seatbelt, he glanced at her. “Didn’t you say you wanted to switch assistants p>
“Did you find someone p>
Dorothea replied without much thought. “Yeah, I did. It’s a guy. He’s still on probation. I’ll see how it goes, and if it doesn’t work out, I’ll switch to a woman p>
“Are you okay with me having a male assistant?” She turned to look at him, serious.
She hadn’t given it much thought, but since they were married for business reasons, honesty just made sense. Even if there were no feelings, misunderstandings were the last thing they needed.
Latham’s throat bobbed. “I don’t mind p>
“Good. I only have a professional relationship with everyone at work, so you really don’t have to worry p>
He gave her a little smile. “That’s good p>
He didn’t ask about the photo. It wasn’t about trust. He just felt a little jealous, that was all.
The next afternoon, Dorothea caught her flight, bringing her assistant along. As soon as they landed, she rushed straight to the cocktail party.
The only upside to having a male assistant was that he could help shield her from all
the toasts, but tonight was different. This time, there was no getting out of it.
Even though she’d taken something to help with the drinking, her stomach still burned by the end of the night.
“Dorothea, should I take you to the hospital? You’ve been holding your stomach for a while,” Edmond asked, sounding worried.
She waved him off. “No, I’m fine p>
Just then, Latham’s call came through. She motioned for Edmond to keep driving, then answered the phone.
“Are you done with your event?” she asked, leaning back and closing her eyes, trying to get comfortable.
“It’s finished,” Latham said, his voice relaxed. “I just wanted to check in. Text me when you get to the hotel p>
“Okay p>
They updated each other on their whereabouts, just like any ordinary couple.
Sweat dampened Dorothea’s
forehead. She knew she was reaching her limit tonight “Edmond can you find a pharmacy and stop? I’ need something for my stomach p>
“Of course, Dorothea p>
Right after the next traffic light, they spotted a 24-hour drugstore. Edmond hopped out and came back about ten minutes later with a bottle of water and a box of pills.
He opened the back door and handed them to her. “I already opened the water for you. Here p>
Dorothea took both, placed a tablet on her tongue, but paused before swallowing. Her eyes narrowed just a little.
Edmond watched her, nervous. “Something wrong, Dorothea p>
She smiled. “I just feel weird with you staring at me. Go back to the front, I’ll take it myself p>
He blinked, then grinned. “Alright p>
In the rearview mirror, he watched her make a swallowing motion, and relaxed.
“Try to get some rest, Dorothea. We’ll be at the hotel soon p>
She closed her eyes and hummed in response.
Ten minutes later, as they got within a hundred meters of the hotel, he called to her quietly. “Dorothea, we’re here p>
She stayed perfectly still, eyes shut and unresponsive. He let out a breath, relieved.
He parked and quickly got out,
o the back door-Just as he
Was
to reach for her waist,
Dorothea’s eyes snapped open.
“What’s wrong? Did you think I’d fall asleep just from drinking some water p>
She looked right at him, her voice calm. “Edmond, I just called the police. How do
you plan on explaining things to them p>
A police car had pulled up behind them without him ever noticing.
Edmond’s face went pale. “How did you know p>
Dorothea let out a cold laugh. “Please. I’m sick of Carola’s little games. I’m not falling for the same trick twice p>
