Chapter 464
ແ
“Mr. Fawkes, maybe we should go see-“
Gregory sensed Soren’s mood and was about to suggest something, but Soren was already striding out the door.
He walked briskly in the direction Evangeline had gone.
“This soup is pretty good. You should try some.”
“The omelette are great for breakfast, too. I bought them from that shop downstairs. They’re just as good as I remember.”
“Finn, you studied abroad, right? What did you usually have for breakfast?”
As he reached the doorway, Soren heard the light chatter from inside the room.
He stepped forward and saw Evangeline sitting by the hospital bed, her back to the door. She held a small bowl of steaming hot soup that she had just bought.
In her other hand, she held a spoon.
She brought the spoon to her lips, gently blowing on the soup to cool it before bringing it to Finn’s mouth.
Even with just her back to him, Soren could picture the smile on her face from the tone of her voice.
Soren had intended to drag her back.
But standing there at the doorway, for some reason, he found himself frozen in place.
A familiar, sharp pain pricked at his heart.
The lively, talkative Evangeline from the past, who he hadn’t seen in so long, seemed to have reappeared before his eyes. But this time, the man she was with wasn’t him.
“Mr. Fawkes, what brings you here?”
Finn looked up and saw Soren at the door. He raised an eyebrow and greeted him. “Is there something you need?”
Only then did Evangeline turn around. When she saw him, her expression reverted to the quiet composure she had maintained for months.
It was as if the cheerful girl from moments ago had been a figment of his imagination.
He said nothing.
Evangeline set down the bowl of soup, stood up, and walked toward him.
Soren’s throat tightened. “Evangeline…”
But before he could finish,
Evangeline grabbed the edge of the
hospital room door and shut it
without hesitation, blocking him from view.
Soren stood there, speechless.
Gregory, who had followed him, witnessed the scene and couldn’t help but feel a pang of pity for his boss.
But he also knew that there was no turning back in matters of the heart. Mr. Fawkes had gone too far in the past and getting the door shut in his face by Evangeline was only to be expected.
“What’s wrong?” Finn asked with a hint of confusion after she returned.
She had been exceptionally cold to Soren just now. Even when she was upset with him before, she had never been this blunt.
Evangeline was too embarrassed to admit that she partly blamed Soren for Finn’s injuries.
Soren had stopped her, which led to her being cornered by Victor and his men, which in turn led to Finn getting hurt and almost dying.
Even if Soren hadn’t stopped her, Victor probably would have found another way to corner her.
But since it had happened this way, Evangeline couldn’t help but blame him. Evangeline stirred the soup. “It’s nothing. Was someone outside?”
Finn paused for a moment, then smiled.
He shook his head, his tone indulgent. “No one. I must have been seeing things.”
Even though he didn’t know why she was upset, he knew that humoring her was always the right move.
Evangeline scooped another spoonful of soup and brought it to his lips. “By the way, have you heard anything from Tessa recently?”
Finn froze for a second.
Before he could answer, Evangeline continued, “I just feel like something was off about Victor last night, but is can’t put my finger on it.”
“And Tessa’s letter arrived at such a convenient time. Glenn and I were wondering if
she might have come back to Serenity City.”
