Chapter 470
Richard frowned, annoyed.
He clearly mistook Evangeline for Glenn’s secretary, assuming she was just there to help Glenn out of a tight spot. He couldn’t help but scold her, “We’re discussing important business. Who are you to speak here?”
“Glenn, are all your employees this rude?”
Theo was actually quite relieved to see Evangeline. Glenn had, in a way, returned to the country for her. Now that Glenn was in trouble, he admired her courage for stepping up to speak for him.
Even if her excuse was a bit flimsy-he didn’t really believe she had landed some major deal.
Theo scoffed and shot back at Richard, “Who’s the one being rude here? Compared to some people, our staff are paragons of etiquette.”
Richard was left speechless by his sarcasm.
But he knew Theo’s temper and couldn’t be bothered to argue with him, so he turned to Glenn instead.
Glenn’s tone was serious. “She is not my employee. She is one of the original founders of UME, and she will be a future shareholder.”
Richard’s eyes widened.
Only then did he take a proper look at Evangeline.
No matter how he looked at her, he couldn’t see anything special. Then, he recalled
a rumor he’d heard recently—that Glenn had gone to great lengths to move UME back to the country in pursuit of love.
He knew Glenn, or at least he thought he did. He didn’t think Glenn was rational enough to go to such extremes for a woman.
But hearing Glenn’s words now, he suddenly started to believe those rumors.
Love really does make people crazy.
Glenn stood up, straightened his already neat suit, and gestured toward the office exit for Richard and his team.
“I have other business to attend to, so I won’t keep you any longer.”
At this point, Richard didn’t try to persuade him further.
He had never believed Glenn could win this bet in the first place.
Now, seeing that Glenn had apparently lost his mind over a woman, victory was practically guaranteed.
There was no need to rush things.
The board wasn’t in a hurry anyway; he was just eager to secure UME to score some points for himself.
Richard stood up. Before leaving, he
be
said to Glenn Struggling is useless. if you insist, t be waiting to see what you can do.”
“I’ll be back in a month.”
With that, he walked out of the conference room, his team following behind him.
After Richard and his people left,
Theo gave Evangeline a thumbs-up. “Well played. Whether we win the bet or not, at least you savedumes face for now.”
Evangeline said, “We saved face, and we can win the bet, too.”
Theo just assumed she was trying to comfort them, saying nice things to boost their morale, and didn’t comment further.
“Why are you here?” Glenn asked, looking at her with concern. “You should have stayed at the hospital.”
Last night, she’d had a run-in with Victor and nearly lost her life. He had specifically given her time off.
Even if she was fine, Finn’s condition
was critical. He had been injured because of her and as his girlfriend, she should have been by his side
Glenn was worried the Lockridges might hold it against her for coming to the office.
Evangeline was about to tell Glenn about the call she had received when the receptionist rushed in from outside.
“Mr. Carlisle, there are some foreign businessmen here. They say they’re looking for Director Whitmore.”
Richard led his team out of the building, the people behind him grumbling.
“I told you we should have just waited a month. Now what? Are we supposed to leave with our tails between our legs like beaten dogs?”
