Chapter 478
But now she realized his coldness was a complete disregard for life.
Theresa spoke again, her tone serious. “This isn’t a waste of time. It’s a life.
Victor was dismissive. “It’s just a dog. And it’s badly hurt; it’s not going to survive. There’s no point wasting energy on it.”
He had already tried to talk Jason out of it, but Jason wouldn’t listen, insisting on taking it to a hospital.
Victor was about to say more, but Theresa ignored him. She pulled out her phone and called her driver, who hadn’t gone far, telling him to turn around and take Jason and the puppy to the hospital.
Seeing he couldn’t change her mind, Victor tried to get in the car with them, but Theresa slammed the door shut, leaving him outside.
“Tessa, what are you doing? Open the door!”
Victor banged his fist on the car window in frustration.
Theresa ignored him and told the driver to head to the veterinary hospital.
Jason knew it wasn’t appropriate for him to be in the car with Theresa, especially when she and Victor were fighting.
But right now, he had no other choice.
Looking at Theresa’s angry profile in the front seat, he spoke in a low voice. “That’s how rich kids are. They never learn until they’ve felt someone else’s pain.”
Theresa just gave a soft “Oh,” and couldn’t help but glance back at the puppy.
It was a small, yellow-furred thing, only a few months old. It whimpered softly, its body trembling. Dried blood matted its fur, making it look dirty and pitiful.
Clearly in discomfort, the puppy shifted, and its bloody paw pressed against the car seat, leaving a distinct print.
At that exact moment, Theresa frowned, her heart aching at the severity of the puppy’s injuries.
Jason misunderstood her expression, thinking she was upset about the car getting dirty. He took off his suit jacket and placed it under the puppy’s paws.
“That’s not what I meant,” Theresa said.
Jason nodded. “I understand.”
What did he understand?
He didn’t understand at all.
Theresa thought silently, but she didn’t say it out loud.
The car soon arrived at a veterinary hospital. Jason rushed inside with the puppy, and Theresa followed. As she entered she saw a vet examining the puppy in Jason’s arms.
Then the vet took a phone call. His expression quickly changed, and after a muttered apology, he announced the clinic was closing for the day.
“It’s still so early. Why are you closing?”
“He needs your help to survive,” Jason said urgently.
The vet looked sympathetic. “Did you two cross
our manager Someone? He called
and said if we don’t
close hell file a complaint and have our clinic shut down for good.
“We can’t afford that kind of trouble. You should try somewhere else.”
Just then, Theresa’s phone rang. It was Victor.
“Apologize,” Victor’s voice was cold. “I’m furious right now. But if you apologize to
me and come back immediately, I’ll let them treat the dog.”
Victor himself couldn’t quite pinpoint why he was so angry, but he couldn’t stand it. Theresa had repeatedly gotten angry with him over other people and now she was giving him the cold shoulder fora dog. In he didn’t put a stop to it now, she’d start thinking he was a pushover.
He wasn’t thinking about anything else; he just wanted Theresa to back down.
Theresa realized Victor was behind the threat. She let out a bitter laugh. “Apologize?”
“In your dreams, Victor. We’re breaking up. For good this time. We are never, ever getting back together!”
