Yale’s face was flushed with anger. “Just who do you think you are?!”
The longer Yvonne spoke, the further she pushed her luck. Yale finally snapped.
“On what grounds?” she shot back coolly. “On the grounds that I’m carrying Dad’s grandchild. If you’re jealous, why don’t you try getting pregnant yourself?”
Yale was momentarily lost for words. This woman…
So just because she was pregnant, she thought she could seize control of the entire Schultz family? Swallow up everything for herself?
“Acting like you’re the only one who can have kids,” Yale blurted, fuming. “Fine! Tomorrow I’ll get a woman and have a child myself! How hard can it be? Just a night’s work!”
He was so infuriated now, anything might come out of his mouth.
“What kind of nonsense is that?!” Mona snapped.
“Shut it, you damn kid!” Tristan thundered. “You think having a child is that simple? Pick the wrong woman and you’ll be up to your neck in trouble. Just look at Yvonne…”
Even though she was from the well-known Quinn family, Tristan couldn’t help but feel Xander had brought nothing but trouble home with her.
Unbothered, Yvonne turned to Tristan. “Since you have no objections, Dad, let’s call the bank now. From tonight forward, I’ll manage the credit cards.”
“And if the bank calls about anything, let them talk to me directly.”
“The banks are closed!” Mona all but growled, her jaw clenched tight.
Was this woman really going to hold them all hostage all night just so she could sink her claws into every last cent? She couldn’t let a single penny slip by.
Tristan, losing patience, tried a diplomatic tone. “There’s no need to rush. We can handle it tomorrow.”
But Yvonne didn’t back down. “The Schultz family is a major client. We have our own account manager-they’ll pick up the phone even if it’s three in the morning.”
Tristan went silent.
Yvonne pressed on. “Dad, don’t blame me for insisting on this tonight. But there’s a stepmom in this house now I’m worried sweet nothings might be whispered into your ear. You say we’ll handle it tomorrow, but who knows how you’ll feel after a night alone with her?”
Tristan just stared at her, speechless.
Mona was shaking. “You… you’re unbelievable!”
To bring up pillow talk again and again and right to her face! Did the Quinn family raise their children openly disrespect their elders? She nearly felt faint from rage.
Yvonne cleared her throat and called out sweetly, “Dad!”
“Stop calling him that!” Mona screeched. Just hearing Yvonne shout “Dad” over and over had Yale’s head throbbing, too.
“That’s fine,” Yvonne shrugged. “I can stop calling him Dad. But your grandson in my belly will still call him Grandpa, won’t he?”
Mona and Yale were struck dumb. Bringing up the baby again-he hadn’t even been born, and she was already an expert at using him as leverage.
Finally, worn down by Yvonne’s persistent, cloying cries of “Dad,” Tristan called the bank himself. He confirmed all the changes in account authority, point by point.
Mona and Yale looked ready to flip the table in fury, but neither dared to act out with Tristan present.
There was no denying it-every “Dad” that came out of Yvonne’s mouth came at a steep price. By now, their blood pressure had shot through the roof heart attacks Seemed imminent.
Tristan hung up, his face grim. “Are you satisfied now?”
“Wait!” Yvonne interjected just as he stood to leave.
That one word made both Mona’s and Yale’s hearts jump into their throats.
Tristan visibly tensed. Apparently, a whole evening of Yvonne calling him “Dad” had left him with a minor case of POSD no one wanted to hear that honeyed plea ever again.
“What now?” Yale ground out.
Yvonne calmly reached into her bag and pulled out a thick stack of paperwork. “Dad may have called the bank just now…”
She paused, letting the implication sink in. “But what if, after a whole night of pillow talk, you change your mind?”
Even Xander was stunned when he saw the pile—nearly two inches thick.
When had she even put all of this together? He hadn’t noticed a thing.
