Skye couldn’t help but scoff inwardly. Was this some kind of joke? If she actually had the chance at a sister-in-law, of course she’d want one. Too bad her brother Finley had been impossible from the start-his attitude had grated on her nerves for years.

She’d introduced him to every kind of woman imaginable, parade after parade of knockouts, all to no avail. Didn’t matter if they were tall, petite, blonde, brunette, dark-skinned, fair-skinned-Finley hadn’t shown the faintest interest in any of them. Just thinking about it made Skye feel a familiar ache of exasperation in her gut.

“I’m serious,” Yvonne assured her. “And listen-Finley actually seems interested in this one! For real!”

“Are you kidding me?” Skye was floored. Finley? Interested in a woman? After everything she’d put him through every ‘type’ under the sun-now, suddenly, he’d warmed up to someone? She could hardly believe it.

Skye’s curiosity got the better of her. What on earth made this woman so special?

“I’m not lying to you. Would I lie about something like this?” Yvonne pressed.

Skye hesitated. Other people, maybe, but Yvonne? She was notorious for her tricks. If anyone would mess with her over something like this, it’d be Yvonne.

“You’d better not be making this up,” Skye warned.

“I wouldn’t dare,” said Yvonne, tone light. “Thing is, your future sister-in-law apparently needs some help from you right now.”

“What kind of help?” Skye’s suspicion only deepened.

“Someone’s after her wants her dead!” Yvonne replied.

Skye froze. That sounded like trouble. Her instincts screamed that this was setting off every red flag she had.

“If Finley’s interested in her, why isn’t he protecting her himself?” she shot back. “Why call me? And what’s with the ‘sister-in-law’ talk?”

“He wants to protect her, but I think he’s too shy to just step in. So he went about it

in a roundabout way-through Star,” Yvonne explained, sounding as if this was perfectly normal.

Skye just stared. “Wait-what?”

“Yep. Star called me, not you-said she doesn’t know you well enough, so she asked me to contact you on her behalf,” Yvonne continued

kind of thing the Yoder family should handle themselves? Why should I get involved?”

Skye paused, mulling it over. It made a certain kind of sense, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that there was a hidden catch lurking beneath it all. Still-if Finley really liked someone, didn’t that outweigh everything else? This was the best news she’d had in ages.

“So what exactly do you mean by ‘interested’? Tell me everything,” Skye demanded, unable to contain her curiosity.

Whether Yvonne was messing with her or not, Skye had to know. After all these years, was her stubborn, emotionally sluggish brother finally waking up to romance?

Yvonne cleared her throat, feigning formality. “Okay. Finley had Star call you to ask you to protect this woman.”

“But I haven’t gotten any call from Star,” Skye interrupted, frowning.

Honestly, she’d always been a little envious that Yvonne had such an adorable sister. But since Star was part of Yvonne’s family, Skye kept her distance-she liked Star, sure, but Yvonne had a jealous streak a mile wide, and if Skye were too friendly, God only knew what trouble Yvonne would stir up.

“Of course you didn’t,” Yvonne retorted. “Star called me, remember? She said she

didn’t know you well enough and asked if I could reach out instead.”

“Hang on, say that again?” Skye rubbed her temple, trying to process the convoluted explanation.

Yvonne sighed as if speaking to a child. “Finley told Star to call you and ask for your help to protect this woman. But Star isn’t comfortable reaching out to you herself, so she called me and had me do it. Bottom line: Finley wants your help protecting her. Make sense?”

It finally clicked. Finley wants her protected.

“Got it,” Skye said, grinning with disbelief and excitement.

Yvonne pressed, “See? Doesn’t it all add up? Finley finally cares about a woman— are you still not convinced?”
