Chapter 298 Shadows and Doubts
She turned without another word, leaving Calvin no chance to reply.

He watched her back as it disappeared down the hall and raised a hand to his forehead with a sigh.
–
He had wanted to tell her to explain that the only reason Wayne had managed to arrive in time was because he himself had pulled every string he had left, humiliating himself in the process, just to make sure Scarlett wouldn’t be crushed under Professor Gomez’s weight.
If Wayne had been any later, Scarlett might never have recovered.
The thought stung. His eyes grew red.
Once, Scarlett had listened to him with such patience, even when he lectured at length. Now, she dismissed him after only a few words, before he could even reach his point.
Why?
He regretted everything. He had even gone so far to help her this time. Why couldn’t she treat him like before, like the prized mentor she once admired? Why not?
His hands raked through his hair, but the only thing he felt was a dull ache.
“Professor Miller.”
The low voice came from behind him.
Calvin turned. “Hm?” ᴜᴘᴅᴀᴛᴇ ꜰʀᴏᴍ.net
“I know you want Scarlett to remain your student. But the truth is, she’s already graduating”
The words made his chest burn with anger. Someone dared to read his thoughts aloud!
“If you think you can become my student this way, drop it. I don’t take disciples lightly.”
The man chuckled, as though he’d just heard a joke.
“You still think you’re the most sought–after professor from a few years ago? Students dread being assigned to you now. You’ve become notorious.”
“Shut your mouth!” Calvin roared, his face flushed. Were they not at school, he might have struck the boy for his insolence.
But the man only waved a hand, dismissive.

“I didn’t come to quarrel. I came to offer cooperation. If you do as I say, Scarlett will acknowledge you as her only true mentor. What do you think?”
Calvin’s brow furrowed. “Who are you? You’re no student here.”
The man lit a cigarette right in front of him, smoke curling lazily in the air.
“Does it matter? All you need to know is what you want. And whether I can help you get it. Isn’t that what matters, Professor Miller?”
Calvin’s expression soured. He had never been the sort to crave recognition. And yet… the temptation in those words gnawed at him.
Not for himself. He told himself it was for Scarlett, to make things right.
After a long silence, he finally spoke. “Fine. I’ll listen. But if your plan harms Scarlett in any way, I’m out.”
The man laughed coldly, the sound stinging Calvin’s ears with humiliation.
“You’ll contact me.”
Then he turned on his heel and strode off, his steps quick and sharp.
Meanwhile, Scarlett’s worry over Colt finally tipped past restraint.
She hailed a taxi and headed to the station.
She had to see him
on anything else.

Her heart churned as the cab sped through the heat. She’d already sent Xu Ming over a dozen messages, none answered. Each silence only deepened her dread.
“Faster, please,” she urged the driver.
He glanced at her in the rearview mirror, wary. “Pretty girl like you… you’re not a criminal turning yourself in, are you?”
“…” Scarlett blinked.
Her silence made him sweat. He pressed harder on the gas, as if afraid she’d kill him if he drove
too slow.

Scarlett sighed. “I’m just visiting a friend.”
:.
The driver’s shoulders loosened. “Ah, just visiting someone inside. That’s fine then.
By mid–afternoon, the summer sun had baked the asphalt until it stearned. Scarlett clutched her phone so tightly her knuckles went white.
On the screen, every message to “Colt” sat unanswered, red exclamation marks glaring back at her. Every call returned the same cold recording: The number you have dialed is currently unavailable.
At the police station gates, the golden emblem of the state gleamed painfully bright.
Scarlett drew in a breath and stepped inside.
“Hello. I’m looking for Detective Colt from the criminal investigation unit. I’m his friend.” She kept her voice calm.
The desk officer lifted her gaze, unimpressed. “Do you have an appointment?”
